I think #34 should be farther instead of further. Farther denotes distance, but it doesn't have to be physical distance. Further denotes extent (i.e. Let's discuss this further, or to a greater extent). After following the quiz writer's link to his support for uses of further and farther, I found this under the farther definitions:
  • 2. at or to a more advanced point: They are going no farther in their studies.
That's almost exactly what question #34 says:
  • 34. He is __________ along in his academic program __________ he thought.
