I've never read comic books, but I recently read the Marvel Zombies mini-series and I though it was pretty cool. Well the art anyways. The Dialog was pretty lame. So my question are there any good, new comic books series that aren't geared towards 12 y/o's, that have a good story?
 
Civil War was a pretty good story arc. I think something new is brewing with Marvel. I haven't really kept up. Try the Marvel.com website, I'm sure there's something that will suit your interests.
 
Yes, definitely. Here are some of my faves (I almost never read mainstream Marvel/DC stuff):

The Walking Dead - Zombie survival story. It's by Robert Kirkman who did the Marvel Zombies mini-series you mentioned. It's in black and white and mostly seems to be in the style of the Romero classics.

Invincible - Also by Kirkman. The story of a highschool kid that starts getting superpowers and finds out his dad is Omni-Man (who's kind of like Superman). It sounds horribly lame and I avoided it for a long time because it sounded so formulaic, but it's really not. The stories are fantastic.

Top 10 - Imagine Law & Order or NYPD Blue, but set in a city full of robots, vampires, superheroes, Greek gods, wizards, telepaths, etc. etc. It gets a little too edgy sometimes -- the writer likes to deal with taboos like incest, pedophilia, bestiality, and the like. In that respect, it's really more like a Law & Order: SVU, but with more swearing.

Powers - Similar to Top 10, but darker, more in the style of Batman: The Animated Series (if you're familiar). And it only features superheroes and how they interact with a more realistic modern-day legal/enforcement system. The cops in this one don't have any powers themselves.

Y: The Last Man - Every male creature on earth dies except for one guy and his pet monkey. Society crumbles, then begins to rebuild. Vaguely post-apocalyptic.

If you look on Amazon, you can find the trade paperback versions of all of those -- they usually collect 6-12 issues in a single volume. None of these are aimed at (or appropriate for) children.
 
Spawn is a a great comic, but not one to drop into.
Long continuing stories and refferences to past editions.
 
I like Batman a lot. What are some good grahic novels with him in them? I read Batman: Year One which was really good, but there are soooooo many I don't know which ones are good or not.

The Batman Knightfall series was great. That is in a 2 part graphic novel right now. I know there is a sequel to that series as well called Knightsend. Probably one of the best I have read in a long time.

I thought Civil War was ok (got better in the end). I really liked the House of M storyline. This summer is World War Hulk, let's see how good it turns out to be.
 
Are there any good cops-and-gangsters (and similar) themed comic books? I have never read comic books (other than the funnies) and have zero interest in superheroes, aliens, mutants, robots, wizards and that sort of thing.
 
I keep up with Marvel stories and I'd have to say that the Ultimate ones are probably a bit childish but they are still good. Ultimate Spiderman is a good one to check out that is not very childish. Ultimate Xmen may be second on the list of Ultimate titles to read. Ultimates(like avengers for Ultimate universe) is definitely not childish but is fairly short. It's definitely a good read.

 
As a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan I have really enjoyed reading Joss Whedon's Buffy comic books. They pick up where season 7 left off.

yeah Ultimate series sucks.


World War Hulk is looking pretty good so far. Civil war was good (well more of a fight not a war). To bad Cap America died.
 
I'm biased as a longtime DD fan, but there is a great 5-comic miniseries called "The Man Without Fear" that has a great story and excellent art. You can probably get all 5 comics for less than $20 at your local shop. Great series!

I just finished reading The Eternals... and speaking of NG, the Sandman books he did were also quite good.

I'm reading Earth X (followed by Universe X... I actually bought UX first, not realizing it was the second book in the series), but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. lol.
 
I've looked at the various titles they have in the Max series and nothing really interests me. I suppose I should have clarified in my original post what I wanted to read a little better.

I want something with superhero's. Like xmen, spiderman, hulk, ironman all those kinda of superhero's would be great, but I just don't want the comics to be geared towards kids.
