Ok, so I started my job last week, and I got my hours, and it's HORRIBLE.

My team does 24/7 monitoring for a Medical Organization. And so...that means SOMEONE has to be there 24 hours a day. And out of our team, I'm the youngest, least experienced person. So it would make total sense that I get the CRAP hours...but it's bad.

ALL night hours. It's horrible. But I HAVE played with all the benefits. This is a HUGE international company. Times are TOUGH right now, so I'm lucky to have an IT job. And there is definitely good chances that I can move to other projects in the very near future. (Not immediately though, because the project is just starting.) This company is giving me benefits, and all that good stuff. And it is full time.

But it just sucks. Just tell me it's ok for a FIRST job, and that I'm off to a *decent* start. Pay IS pretty good, and I'm living at home still, so I'm saving plenty of money.

Anyone have anything similar they care to share to make me feel better!

Yes, it sucks dude, but don't leave until you find something better. Having no job is worse, and sooner or later you can say "Hey, I put my time in, let someone else take the suck a$$ hours.

I'm not even thinking about leaving. Even if I was miserable, this project JUST starting out....I wouldn't just leave like that. That would be crappy. Damn me and my work ethic.

Yup. This week is normal, but next week I start my Rotations. And yeah, I do have Saturday's free, and three day weekends. Believe me, I've tried to find every bright spot that I can.

Not many bosses around at night, so I will have a lot of free time to nef some midnight threads here at AT :D

I have to keep on reminding myself that this company is huge. (Top 300 in Fortune.) And that this is what I wanted, to work for a big/good company for a while, then get into a better Graduate School. And HOPEFULLY I can move to a development project sometime soon.

Thanks people, believe me you are helping.

mcdonalds won't even hire me. I'm a 21 year old college student who's been working since age 16. My app screams responsible, hard working. Many references from teachers, previous employers, family friends who own businesses. Yet I cannot even get a job at fast food. Keep your job, I wish I had one. I applied to be a bus driver for my local transit system. I was even turned down for that despite the fact that I've been driving since age 16 with no accidents and not once been pulled over.

Anyone have some recommendations on where I could look for a job once I've applied at all the fast food places in town.

I think that there is a problem here. Where do you live?

If I were you, I would start a whole new thread asking for advice from folks who live near you.

You have to pay your dues. Stick it out and take advantage of the educational benefits. After a couples of years if the job still sucks you can leave with a fatter resume.

I started out at my job working midnight-8AM Monday-Friday. I would have gladly traded for your hours to have a four-day week. For just starting out, that's fine. If the new guy gets the crap hours, that's better than places who insist on everyone doing rotating shifts. At least down the road you know you'll have better hours and they'll eventually stay that way.

There are thousands of people who have terrible benefits, thousands more who have no chance to move up, and thousands more who can't find an IT job all of whom would love to trade places with you.

Maybe you can do what I did when I had that midnight shift. After a few months I told my boss that I wanted more assignments because I didn't have enough work to keep me busy all night. My co-workers were content to read comic books or sleep. It was a good situation because there were no phone calls, no people walking in and interrupting you. I taught myself programming using a Fortran compiler manual and reading other Fortran programs, and wrote a half-assed application that actually improved worker efficiency. A month later I got a promotion and I have been promoted five times since then. I could have squandered that time like my co-workers did. You can either complain about what you don't have or take advantage of what you do have.

Nice. Thank You. That was truly an excellent post. I hope to use my time efficiently. But I'm guessing that right when we take over, I might be sorta busy for a while. But yeah, I've already planned on using my time well.

Doesn't look too bad from my view.
You have 3 days off a week.

I'm a manager at McDonalds....does that make you feel better ???
Its worse, I'm the store manager so I'm like on called 24/7 like a doctor without the big pay.

Hey Rickten, if you're in Orlando, I'll hire you at McDonalds.

Have you tried any temp agencies? I don't know where you are, but in Nevada, if you've taken A&P and chemistry, you can work as a pharmacy tech. Hospitals have a lot of jobs at night (laundry, janitorial) -- not the most desirable shift, but less competition. Have you applied for jobs on campus? Have you checked your state and county government websites for their job listings? Have you applied at cool (or even uncool) retail places like book and music stores? Hit the mall and put in an application everywhere.

Good luck, I know it'll happen for you.

Oh and Keyser, just keep in mind that your shift isn't permanent... and you can catch up on some great IMing and posting! Or, um, be productive... great post, Kranky!
