Which VPN? I keep hearing people say this but never which one to use. You think the VPN you use is going to keep quite if the feds said give up the logs.

After a lot of research I've been using this VPN: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/ It's fast (download speeds have not changed), reliable, cheap, $3.33/month, secure, easy to use, their software has a VPN kill switch and DNS leak protection, and they keep no logs.

VPNs will definitely become more popular now.

Also if ISPs can choose to implement this rule or not, the ones that do not will get more business. I was looking at my ISP's home page as they are starting to roll out fiber in some places and it even advertises "download movies and music faster!". Even THEY know what people are using it for. Otherwise, what is the point of anything above dialup?

Might have missed the boat on them anyway. They are in the crosshairs and I think take down notices are resulting in a lot of removed content.

That's too bad, Newsgroups used to be great and SSL connections were nice as well.

Link? I'm assuming this only applies to "US based" Newsgroup servers such as Easynews/Giganews or whatever.

So reading the news about the 6 strike rules. I came across Deep packet Inspection (DPI) and how Comcast runs it on their internet traffic. Does anybody know what are the capabilities of this inspection? So does it mean anything that does not go through a secure connection (HTTPS/SSL) can be read by the ISP? What about chat logs/postings on forums/video chat like Skype?

I saw that they looking into installing DPI points between the user and the internet. Can it be developed to read/decrypt HTTPS/SSL? Like say for example the ISPs lobby and basically pass laws granting them access to web certificates for inspection purposes...

Would like to hear from others. I am not a security expert by any stretch of the imagination, but your ISP cannot read what you're doing with your bank because it's secure, the same would go for content that you have between an encrypted VPN. All they'll see is trash that they cannot do anything with. Then VPN <-> internet may not be secure, but then it's encrypted before going back to you so it's good. The failure point would be if the VPN tracks what you do and maintains logs, hence the question to VPNs of what, if anything, they log. And if a VPN did that it basically circumvents the point of it. Any big VPN out there will die overnight if their privacy policy turns out to be untrue and/or they start giving out data to authorities.

I do think it's rather hypocritical that people complain about SOPA/6 strikes/etc and then openly admit that they pirate.

Admitting that their customer base is pirates is an easy way to get shutdown or blocked though.

I'm actually surprised how lenient this whole program is. You basically can get away with illegally downloading about 4 or 5 times before you really start getting anywhere near legal action. I would think pirates would be excited about it. It used to be you got a letter in the mail and you had to pay a fine right away or get a lawyer ready.

Because if you disagree with the erosion of privacy and due process you must be a pirate...

I don't have a choice but to use Comcast, they have a huge monopoly out here where I live.

Same here. I have their business class service and they won't throttle. I keep hearing about a seedbox..what is it and does it work ? Cheaper than a VPN? There are so many vpns I don't know which to look at from that list. Would hate to have slower service.
