Colo. lawmakers suggest carrying pens rather than carrying a gun

You can't make this shit up.

The gun debate is heating up in Colorado, with politicians from all over the state trying to come up with a way to handle gun violence in a post-Newtown world.

Two Colorado Democrats, specifically, have suggested that carrying ballpoint pens, forming a buddy system or learning judo are better alternatives than carrying a gun.

“There’s mace, what about a taser? The buddy system,” Rep. Paul Rosenthal said, addressing the state legislature on why Colorado should ban students from carrying guns on campus.

“There are other methods of self defense … judo or what have you,” he added, declaring that guns are not the only way to defend oneself.

In late January, State Sen. Jessie Ulibarri told the Colorado Senate Judiciary Committee that ballpoint pens save lives.

“When Congressman [Gabrielle] Giffords was shot and there was a shooting in an Arizona supermarket, people who were unarmed took that person down when he stopped to reload,” Mr. Ulibarri told the committee on Jan. 28.

“There are other ways to address violence and it doesn’t mean we have our kids exposed to a whole crossfire of multiple folks in a room shooting simultaneously,” he continued. “Congressman Giffords’ life was saved and so many others’ when very valiant folks stood up to defend themselves and protect themselves, and they did it with ballpoint pens.”

If only someone at Columbine, A SCHOOL, had a pen during the multiple times the shooters reloaded. I am going to officemax and arm myself. I a Bic Pen guy myself but to each their own.

Obviously pens are dangerous and we need pen control laws! ;)

The morons are really coming out of the woodwork with this. I guess that's the silver lining, it makes it much easier to spot the truly terminally stupid.

Now if we could just get the mexican cartels and all the gang members to carry pens instead of guns.

And my concern is if we go the pen route will we be limited to no more than seven pens on our person at one time? Wil there be pens defined as "assault pens"? Will we have to register the pens? Will we have to acquire licenses to carry? Democrats...absolutely no doubt they are dumber than a cup of dirt.

You can carry as many pens as you want however you can only have enough ink in each pen to write 7 pages and there can be no pistol grip on your pen.

"What have you" is a lethal martial art.

I think this is a great plan and think of all the money it would save the police. I recommend we take their guns and issue them quality pens.

In fairness there was an armed guard at Columbine who exchanged fire with Harris and Klebold, who proceeded to shoot several more people after the exchange. A gun is not necessarily the solution to every problem, though admittedly a pen certainly is not either.

As long as the pens aren't black and don't look evil I think they will be ok. Maybe, at most, one nasty looking thing per pen. For example, your pen can have black ink but it cannot have a soft grip. Absolutely, under no circumstances, should we allow multi-color pens. Not only are they dangerous, people may be distracted by them when they try to press all the colors down at once.

Seems highly possible though that the exchange of gun fire between the shooters and armed guard could have saved lives by buying time for kids to get to safety.

Don't forgot to spontaneously be able to vomit on your attacker in case of rape! It's the only sure fire way to protect yourself from a rapist.

Grow up and move on with your life. WTF cares what these people think as if pens will be the order of the day. Enough fucking gun threads already. Your fear and hatred will be your demise.

It's amazing that most of Europe hasn't been Murdered by now.

I think most of their cops don't try and stop gunmen with pens.

Anybody see Never Say Never Again, a 007 movie from the 80's? Had an awesome pen gun in it.

The pen is mightier....

Oh celebrity jeopardy....

In late January, State Sen. Jessie Ulibarri told the Colorado Senate Judiciary Committee that ballpoint pens save lives.

How are these two sentences even related?!
