Actually, its a 1999 Jeep Cherokee....I have owned it since 2002.

Check into the salvage value of the vehicle before you contact your insurance company.

You might be able to make more money on the private-party deal than through your insurance company.

If the estimates are too high...offer to sell the guy the Cherokee...:D

-Post pic of your Jeep's damage
-If daddy wants to pay for repairs, he'll have to pay for rental car too.
-You don't have to notify your insurance

A few months back, a kid in his jacked up truck rear-ended my car. The truck was registered to his father, who offered to pay for damages, but the estimates came in at $5K! Needless to say, it was eventually settled through his father's insurance. I had called my agent, but he said if the other party agreed to pay for everything, then there's no need to even file a report with my insurance.

One thing i learned: In my state, if the damage is more than $1K, then I have to call the cops to the accident scene. I never knew that!

You can settle outside of insurance. YOU got rear ended not the other way around so honestly you're not as screwed as they are. But to be honest if I were them I would settle it with insurance. You can pay $1500 and get a bumper fixed or pay it $500 over 3 years with insurance. That's what I thought about when I rear ended someone, and I figured hey why not just deal with insurance. Plus since THEY rear ended you, you can always go to insurance if they screw you over at the shop by settling outside.

I don't get why people settle outside. Unless he's able to get this done for $300 only or something at some "special shop," or unless your insurance rates will jack up more than the cost of the repair... But I suppose with a 16 yr old driver that's the case. I would not know since I didn't get into an accident till I was 21+.

If the damage is only aesthetic, keep the money and use it towards your next car. Keep driving your current car until you decide to ditch it.

Just get one estimate to get an idea of what kind of money they're looking at. It's always much higher than you expect. Mention the dollar amount over the phone and if the phone goes quiet hang up and file a claim with their insurance right away.

After looking at your picture, the damage isn't too bad. Get an estimate, get the money, and just hold onto it and use it for another purchase down the road. Pun definitely intended.

This.

I was "front-ended" while I was sitting still last month resulting in fairly minor paint damage to my front bumper. My car is 9 years old with 200K+ miles, so I happily took the $750 estimate from the other driver's insurance company. I may ask my friend who owns a body shop if he can do anything cheap (<$100) but since I plan to drive the car until it dies, I don't really care about the aesthetics. And it's much more noticeable than yours.

If it's a plastic bumper the whole thing will need to be replaced and that isn't very cheap.

Perhaps $1000 - 1500. Shouldn't take them more than a day to fix though once they get the part, unless the frame etc is bent.

Your biggest problem might be getting a replacement bumper since the car is so old. Take the money and run.

Agreed. Get the damage checked out, but as long as everything is still in working order I would just hold on to the cash.

Cherokee values are going up as time goes by. They are great vehicles. Of all the cars I have owned, my Cherokee is in the top 3.

I would call your insurance company and report it. They'll give you 2 options.

option 1 - you go through your insurance, get the money minus your deductible, and once they get the money from the other insurance company, you get your deductible back
option 2 - you go through the other insurance company (or private individual), you get all of the money, and never bother your insurance company with a claim

If option 2 fails, you can always fall back on option 1. I'd report it so they have record of it.

If you're feeling kind, go get an estimate (should take ~10 minutes) + rental car and call the guy with the total cost (body shop + rental) and see what he wants to do.
If you just want the vehicle fixed, call the insurance company (or your company can start the claim for you) and start the claims process.

Your bumper is now under the car, so I'm betting it will be at least 1k to fix. Clearly pops doesn't want to go through insureance, because he knows his rates are going up. You will need a rental for at least 3-5 days. I say go through your insureance, as it will make life easier for you.

Was wondering that myself. She could be scratching the back of her leg with her foot or crossing her legs while standing in a weird way, but I can't help but think she might be an amputee who left her prosthetic shin in the truck.
