maybe this is a thread hijack but can someone explain a bit how the US college system works??
I read about GPA and other stuff and I have absolutely no idea what you guys are talking about
like the dude who started this thread is saying that his grades are not very good but he's starting his second year. How can you start the next year when your grades suck??
and wtf 40k a year?????? :Q
you all must have uberrich parents, higher education seems to be uberexpensive in the US or am I dead wrong??
are you guys all in debt when you finish college????
thx
Most college students will graduate with debt. Hopefully I won't with my co-op's. How much is college elsewhere?
you won't believe it but where I live it's 500-700 euro for a year of college. That's without housing and your textbooks.
+housing is 120 euro to 300 euro a month
+textbooks (depends on what you do in college) - 500-600 euro ??
do the counting and you will see that at most the total cost for a year at a university is around 6000-8000 euro (classes + housing + textbooks).
a lot of students also qualify for financial support from the govt. (ecg I received 3000 euro a year).
I hope you guys make a lot of money when you graduate.

yeah, it is my fault to go to cornell. i don't know, i was gonna apply early decision to columbia. but my dad asked me to consider cornell, and the next thing i know, the application is already sent.
the end of the first semester i got A-, A-, B, and C-. C- is in physics. since the school doesnt send out grades for the fall semester, i told them i got a B- instead of C- in physics. and the spring semester, my grades are A-, B, B-, C, B. they do send out grades, but I got it first. So i ended up sending a fake one to my parents changing the C to a B-. and consequently increasing my gpa from 2.93 to 3.01xx. Now I think i am in deep sh!t because they are gonna go ask the bursar for my grades when I return to school. I am doomed

That 40k a year is for the more prestigious private universities (it's also an estimate for tuition, cost of living, books, etc.). He goes to Cornell. He probably still gets some assistance from the university though unless his family is considered rich enough to afford it. A public university would not cost $40k. Some states actually have free tuition for in-state students. Even if the state doesn't have free tuition, it's not nearly as expensive as $40k![]()

With a 2.94 GPA it's very hard to transfer.

Are you kidding? Any private University is 40k a year. In any case I went the cheap route and got a quality education at a public university

I don't know how it work down there in the US, but here in Canada we don' paid full tuition either. The 45K is actually only 1/2 of the cost & the tax payer foot the rest of the bill. Here we don't have the kind of scholarships that the US have, and most of the scholarship/grant is from $500 to $2000.....while the entire school of over 40,000 students may have 2 full ride & a bout six $10k scholarships. The stipulation here in Canada is that you can only accept 1 scholarship at a time, but you can accumulate grants.Originally posted by: jaydee

college is great
this is why you pay all that money: "drunk horny girls"
hehe
IMHO, school is over rated because I could buy a house or start a business, if the bachelor is 160k & master is around 320k base upon the above post ++ books.
As for me, I'm currently weighting the option of putting 45k ++ time for my master vs. putting it in to a house.
Reon - The other option that you have is drop out & move out to find your own way.
Dude, I don't know anyone that actually pays full tuition. Most schools have a financial assistance to something like 90-95% of the students (unless it's a public school, where tuition will be dirt cheap anyway). And you got scholarships on top of that. And Masters, with a good job, most employers will at least help with paying for that. It really depends on what you want to do, but going to school is most definitly not over rated. Plus a 19 year old can get $30k a year without too many problemsfor a student loan, but what bank is going to give you $160k all at once to start your own business in this day and age?
And for those who think that the 8-5 sucks compared to school, are obviously not engineering students. I'd love to only work on school stuff between 8am -5pm weekdays. Wednesday night I spent 12 straight hours on a Java project. Real world going to be more work? I doubt it.
