Hey OP, back in the day, would you have had to walk uphill in a snowstorm, across a field of broken glass with bare feet, carrying a 68-lb sack of coal to your furnace-powered computer to post this?
Let me guess, college student?
Do you always answer a question with a question?
If it worked for Socrates, why shouldn't he be allowed to answer a question with a question?

To be honest, while I think (hell, know) the study is totally true, I don't think they have the reasons down right.

While back in elementary school we were all told we were special, as soon as we got to middle school the PC movement hit full on. All of a sudden, nobody was different. Didn't matter how smart you were, how much better you were at a sport, and yes, even skin color (heh, we even watched a few "propaganda" videos on that one - they were so unscientific it was rediculous). Nope. We were ALL the same, and nobody was allowed to succeed. Everyone had to be level.

And I'm still seeing this in my college communications class. All we talk about is political correctness and how we have no differences at all. While kids might be more arrogant and self centered, they sure don't have much for self esteem now. You can look to depression statistics for that one.

If you're going to post statistics, back them up with a reference. Otherwise, your claim is no more valid then the following:

5% of the rich go to college while 57% of the poor are crackwhores.

Thats exactly right. The recent surge in the cost of attending college has priced most all but the poor little rich kids from attending. Whiny, self-centered, arrogant kids will continue to be the trend in college and society in general until higher education is once again available at a reasonable cost.

Nice skewing of a statistic. How about the percentage of middle class that goes to college?

If the costs of attending college is so bad why do more kids go to college than at any time in our history?

Heh. That's rediculous. Exhibit A: My friend, has the name of Mike. He has poor parents. He's going to college for free, like almost all poor kids can do. It's not society's fault that they aren't taking up what's given to them.

First, rich versus middle-class is a whole different argument. Personally, as a member of the working poor, I believe there are very few "middle class" left in this country because the difference in earnings between working poor and those more privleged has widened to the vast chasm stage. The reason more attend college now than in the past is because more people recognise that the only way to possibly close that gap, other than by picking the right parents, is to get a better education.

Second, I define 'rich' in terms of attending college as anyone who is able to attend without having to take out massive loans, themselves or their parents and, work two jobs to supprt themselves and pay tuition.

sounds more like kids have been paying attention when told that social security is a POS
Bingo. Financially well-off these days is just being able to live at a similar standard of living as your parents yourself, while maintaining your parents standard of living too and finding the resources to support your kids.:(

It's amazing when scholarships allow a kid who lived below the poverty level until he was 16 to go to a nice university. Just because people go to college without taking out loans or working two jobs does not mean they are rich.

I think this is just more example of the entitlement/ME mentality. Young kids think they "deserve" to have that nice house and two nice cars that their parents do. You don't!

Maybe after you reach their age, have been in the workforce and moved up you can afford that house and cars and big screen TVs. But not until then.

Tell me again how many students are able to attend college on scholarships whether rich or poor?

Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?

The students who deserve the scholarships receive them. Sure, they have to work for it while in high school, but if they haven't worked for it then why should they be able to attend college in the first place. Dumbass students like that will just become part of the high number of college freshman who fail out their first year.

It is especially easy for poor kids to find scholarships and even easier for minorities to find scholarships.

All college students go directly from high school?

It is especially easy for poor kids to find scholarships and even easier for minorities to find scholarships.

It is easier now than when I was a kid in high school to find scholarships but, it is hardly easy to receive one.

I'm not going to argue over the ease of obtaining a scholarship. It was incredibly easy for me as the university approached me with the offer. The rest of my friends who attended college were supported by the federal government. We were all from one of the poorest sections of Nashville, and by no means could have attended college without help.

hmm. that is an interesting article. The article mentions social networking sites, and ya, they do push for that type of behavior.

All businesses thrive on personalizing things for the masses; to make that person feel that the company has actually done something for that person alone. it generates money, and at the same time, probably generated our current gen of self-center people. I have to admit, I am at times self-centered w/ an ego. I hate to admit it, but I catch myself acting like that from time to time. bah, sucks :(.

Congratulations. Sounds like you won the lottery. I just wish more people could have access to higher education. I guess I'm a little jealous.

Clearly I have no expectation that I'll be able to live as well as my parents before they were able to live so well. However I also don't see how the current financial environment for my generation will allow me to live as well after the fact, either.

I'll second that. I have friend whose family's sole income is his dad's earning's at the post office. He's currently going to UW on a full ride because he has demonstrated need and the federal government is subsidizing the costs. College CAN be paid for, it just depends on the sacrifices you're willing to make. taking out government subsidized loans is a REAL option. I'm at Duke right now, which costs $43,000 a year. But my family is only paying about $20,000 a year because teh rest is a) government loans b) duke's own scholarships c) my work study. And this is to an incredibly expensive school. Public state universities are MUCH cheaper, and we're not even looking at community college.

I dont think people should use finances as an excuse for not going to college unless they need to support their entire family. A single individual CAN go to school if they only have to worry about themselves.

Yeah, I went to a state school because of costs and went on subsidized loans. It is very possible. I was too lazy to try for scholarships, but yes it all depends on your work ethic and how much you are willing to sacrifice to get what you want. I didn't know Duke was that expensive! Dang!

I would like to see this broken down by major. In my experience the more tangible majors tend to have more down-to-earth kids than the liberal arts majors.

I read this the other day in the paper I get delivered to my house daily. I was going to type it up and post it, but I figured someone would find it on the internet.

College students are really just children, barely out of adolescence.

Your family is paying only $20,000 a year? So the bill is being footed by your family and not you? I understand you bring in financial help from various sources, none being your own wallet?, but that's a lot of money no matter which way you cut it. The vast majority of families in America cannot afford to send their child to a university with costs that high.
I'm willing to bet your family is quite well-off.
