costco chicken. rice. costco romaine lettuce. costco salmon. eggs. i also go to some open air markets to get avocados and fresh produce for cheap. i tend to stay away from ramen, i have no idea why. but these are some good inexpensive foods that can last long in the fridge.

also, they are good for different meals. for example, when i buy a rotisserie chicken, i usually eat part of it with rice and broccoli for a dinner, and maybe the next day, debone it and use the meat in part of a salad. i also do the same with salmon, and sometimes make fish sandwiches. gl

Pasta.

Agreed... Pasta is cheap and easy to make, is good for leftovers, and tastes great.

Another couple pluses to pasta:

1) You can prepare it enough different ways to have it at least three times a week and not be horribly bored with it
2) You can prepare it in fancy enough ways to impress a girl in a pinch. Say what you like - guys who can cook get better results. 🙂

Cereal or cheap fast food... Taco Bell and places with dollar menus.

I agree with tennisflip. Cereal is the way to go. Quick, easy to make and easy to clean up after eating Buy the nutritional ones or else you will feel woozy after 1 hr or so. Also eat slow so your stomach feels full and you eat less. I can get 2 boxes of cereal and 1 gallon of milk to last at least 5 sometime 8 days.

quesadillas. I agree with the breaded chicken patties too. 20 patties for like $8 at sams club. Different sauces will make it a different meal every time.

Eggs. Waffles. toast.

hamburger is like 2 bucks a pound, hamburger helper is about a dollar a box - will feed 2 athletes @ 1.50 each

i know you already said ramen, but let me go further with that thought:
ramen goes with a lot... if you or someone you knows has a club membership to sams or costco, go with them.
they have great frozen bags of veggies, different types and style of veggies. get a bag of those plus a ginormous bag of indvidually frozen chicken breasts.
they will last you a while and all you have to do is experiement with different types of sauses and spices with the ramen and chicken/tuna and veggies.
its great AND super cheap and fast to make.

Sounds good. I've got a Sams membership and usually get their breaded chicken patties and hamburger buns.

Got any ramen recipes?

I usually add soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, and garlic, as I always have those on hand and they improve the taste tremendously. Sometimes I steam some frozen gyoza in the microwave and drop a couple of those in too.

Food Lion had the helpers on sale for buy one get one free this week 😀. I went by Big Lots as well and picked up some cheap grub and spices.

I love tuna salad as well, nice recommendation

Rule number one is to not eat out.

Rule number two is that usually if it can be prepared with only a couple minutes in the microwave, it probably isn't worth it.

Out of curiosity, what would you put your daily budget at? The average person fails to realize that they could eat quite well for about $5 a day.

Drink water and only water

never decline a free meal 😛

Avoid any food that won't satisfy your hunger.

Shop around at stores like Aldi for some off-brand soups. You can pick up a case of like, tomato soup for a couple bucks, with a dozen cans in it. One can is good for two servings. 🙂

Pay attention to serving sizes. If a product says there are 3 or 4 servings in a box and you polish it off in one sitting, then you really aren't doing well.

If you live in Boston, go to Shaws where the Prudential is and look for their special buys (right now, they ar eintroducing this thing called extreme buys where they sell stuff cheap). Sometimes they have stuff really cheap and/or on clearence (I got a microwave for $14, it was originally $119). Sometimes, they have Ramen @ 10 for 99 cents. They really cater to college srudents because students account for more than half the business.

3 Cans of Campbell's Chunky Soup
1 Can of Campbell's Chicken Noodle
2 Cans of Kidney Beans
Rice (preferably cooked in a rice cooker)

Put everything into a pot, mix.

Cheap meal that's filling for basically about $6.

Costco/BJs has a bag full of frozen meatballs for $10. It will last you a month or two. Throw in some 99 cent pasta and you can have a full meal every other day. 😀

I was a broke college student not too long ago. I lived on Pasta and sauce. If you dont have anywhere to cook , just invest in a small hot pot (even though they were not allowed at my school) and eat pasta + more pasta. You can get cheap hunts sauce (in a can) or just go for whatever is on sale at your local supermarket.

A Box of cereal goes a long way - esp for the $1.50 it costs when on sale.

A 20lb sack of rice will last you almost a year.

Frozen Veggies are usually pretty cheap.

You could always resort to crackers with mustard and ketchup ;p

-Water
-Oats
-Beans

You can flavor any of these also. I drink mostly seltzer water for example. You can add a drop of maple syrup to the oats. You have about 10 different varieties of beans also (sometimes more in different shops). You can also add pasta to the beans which adds a nice carbohydrate.

I read something about diet in WW2 Europe, I'd like to give that a try for a year at somepoint. I don't have enough information on it yet though. I'm fasinated with "theme" diets for some reason. I'd also like to try a ancient greek diet at some point.

5-6 a day is cool by me. Something that I can cook up in bulk and take with me to work as well as something to eat after work. Breakfast consists of a bag of carrots and a granola bar.

Cooking utensils:
Rice Cooker
Frying Pan
Crock Pot
and can pick up a cheap pot.

I already have Ramen, a half a bag of rice, spaghetti noodles, the meatballs and chicken patties all from Sams.

I also picked up some Refried beans 33 cents a can at Big Lots. They have off brand soups and stuff as well(have not tried yet, but the beans are good).

if you have aldi, they have ground turkey for under 1.00 a pound, in those sausage-like tubes.. you can use ground turkey in pretty much anything you'd use ground beef in.. dirty rice, tacos, spaghetti sauce..

chunky soups are good and easy over rice too.. you can find them on sale 1.00 a can every so often... cook up enough rice, you can make two meals out of a can of soup.. hard to get much cheaper than that (and still get a little meat and a couple veggies in the deal).
