college grads: do you get a permanent edu email from your school?

My college email continued to work for a good couple years after I graduated. I was receiving college emails on it once in a while, so I kept it in Thunderbird just for kicks. Then one day it just stopped working. I can't recall what their setup was, think it was just a pop3 on their exchange server.

I still have the .edu address from 1996. Probably the most expensive email address I have.
