Still use it as my primary email 5 years after graduation. Its 10 characters long, including the '@' and '.edu'. Can't beat that anywhere.

yeah its a forwarding address and i dont use it anymore.

funny though my professor/supervisor at my lab uses his a lot still. he's finished his phd at least 7 years ago and i get confused where to email him still.

he teaches at 2 institutions now, and works at a government agency, meaning he has 3 official e-mails, but I still get emails from his old school email address... very confusing.

No option to keep it when I graduated, but I think they started doing it two or three years after.

Nope, no option to keep it, just an alumni alias to forward. I work at a different university now and have a .edu there though. It's nice for discounts.

I get to keep my address I had during undergrad. It will only forward mail though; cannot use their e-mail system.

UT moved to using Google has their mail provider a few years ago. After that, they started allowing people to keep their email address forever.

there was an alum email, but I only would have kept my college email for the convenience of keeping all the saved messages and not changing default emails for various accounts.

The best part about having a .edu email is that I can request free samples from electronics component companies and they provide them no questions asked because they think I'm a student.

UCR one is still working after a year and a half, although they said it'd be down anyday now.

USC says my account will close when I graduate.

When I graduated college, only the "Computer" majors had e-mail from the school. I do now have an alumni e-mail address from that school that is forward only.

When I had graduated from law school, most, but not all students had a <school>.edu e-mail address. I forget when that was turned off, but it was within a year of graduation. I also have an alumni e-mail address from that school that is forward only.

I wonder if my high school has alumni addresses. Hmmm.

As far as I can tell mine from USF is permanent. Back when I started in 2004 USF had their own email server, somewhere along the line they switched over to Google's offerings and my email addy from them still works. I've been out of USF since 2009 and it's still kicking.

I love it because I still get to use it for discounts.

Two months or so my undergrad got rid of alumni addresses (I graduated in 2003) without a written request as many were using them discounts. Graduate school got rid of our e-mail addresses seven days after graduation for the same reason.

As for the alumni networks, they have forums setup and private messaging systems among students, faculty and alumni.

I've read plenty of academic papers from European universities. I've never seen a non-edu email before.
