Collecting DVDs is one of the lamest hobbies.

For real. I understand collecting stamps or baseball cards or rare plates or whatever, but "collecting DVDs" is lame, and here's why: They are not a collector's item. Most people's DVD libraries are made up of mass produced movies that have sold millions of copies.

So now you're probably thinking "But i don't collect them to have a rare collection. I collect them because I watch them.", but in very few cases do you ever make that money back. You can rent a movie for $4 and buy it for $12-20. Most movies you'll only watch once anyway, because let's face it most movies suck.

So in conclusion most people collect dvds because frankly they have nothing better to spend their money on. They really need to find a more productive and fulfilling hobby than filling shelf after shelf of movie that they'll never get a return on investment with.

Wow... I actually agree with you on this. I love going to a person's house and seeing like 500 DVDs... I have ~10, most of which are documentaries, oh, and the Family Guy series

Who really has time to watch even a small percentage of those crappy movies? I have like 15 of them in my FS/FT thread that I took from my parents because they said they didn't want them lying around and they will never watch them.

Collecting things has nothing to do with making money. You collect things that you enjoy. Whether you make money off it or anyone else understand it doesn't make any difference. Real colelctors would never sell anything from their collection anyway.

The return on the investment is th enjoyment you get frmo watching the movie. Not from trying to sell it to someone else later...

I collect DVDs of my favorite movies so that years later I can look back on all the movies I liked such as Band of Brothers and recommend them to other people or rewatch them. A large part of why I collect media is to share it with others.

Sorry but if I feel like watching "The Caine Mutiny" I like being able to walk over to my stack of DVDs and getting it right then and watching it. The other alternatives require me to plan a viewing at some future time.

Um why do you think I would only watch my DVD's once... I have over 2000 DVDs and 4000 VHS all orginals...
and i watch them quite a bit.. cable TV sucks... and I love movies.... I dont undertand your reasoning... dont want to have go back and rent a movie I want to watch again.....
10 bucks per used DVD is not alot to spend...

I dont share your judgement that most movies suck... movies are a great escape from reality which does suck...

30 bucks every couple weeks is not a huge waste of money.. I usally buy 3 used dvds from hollywood or the movie trading company every month sometimes more...

I only buy movies I saw in the theater and love... so none of them really dont get watched..

Tell me, in what way? Such an elegant response must have a large basis of reasons to draw from; or the alternate, your talking crap and should be quiet.

Every person here can criticize to they are blue in the face, but never justify it, Skoorb at least justified his position, albeit flawed, as all collectors of anything are considered by other people to be silly.

I have to disagree with you. I'm not even a movie or DVD collector per se, but I would definitely buy more if I had more money to spend on stuff like that.

There's just so many movies I have to own for my own personal collection. To be able to own them all and be able to watch them any time I want in DVD quality - isn't there something to be said for that?

i kinda disagree... my bro is a total movie buff... he has been making and editing his own movies since he was 14/15 and now he is 19 and going to film school... he has like ~150 DVDs and I can guarantee you he's seen each at least twice... he like collecting movies by directors he likes.... he has all the cohen brothers, tarantino, m. night shamalan, robbie rodriguez and whoever else he likes that i cant think of right now and he watches them over and over special features included when he buys them... its not like the doesn't have a life cause he comes out to the bar with us at least once a week but he just really loves movies...

me? i have 3 DVDs... all of which I bought with gift certificates because there were no CDs i wanted in the store...

I own 4 DVDs... and I agree with you... I only have the urge to re-watch a movie / tv-series once every year or two, if that.

I rarely watch movies in the theater anymore. And when I do, it costs about $20 for my fiance and I to watch the movie. I don't see it as a bad investment to purchase a movie for $14.99 or $15.99 the week it comes out on DVD and then be able to watch it on our own terms. If we fall asleep, we can pick up where we left off the next night or the next week since we don't have to worry about returning it to blockbuster.

Although, I typically purchase older movies, movies that I remember from my childhood growing up and I rarely spend more then $10 on those dvds. I like the 2 for $20 deals or 2 for $15 which bestbuy has a lot of the time.

I also plan on building a theater in my basement with a projector, large screen and recliners. If I can have friends or family over to watch a movie and it only costs $15 for the movie, that's a lot cheaper than having 4-6 people go out to the movies (granted, I realize that I'll have to spend thousands of dollars up front for the equipment to watch the movies).
