I'm all for remakes, they can be brilliant, but wtf was his point here? He turned it into lifeless inept elevator music. The most hilarious and telling part was the fans laughing when it started.

If I were a member of beastie boys, I'd rip coldplay a new one.

I seriously doubt the Beastie Boys would. I think they'd be honoured, but I don't speak for them. Certainly the Cold Play version doesn't capture the essence of the Original, but it wasn't meant to. That's not really the point of a Cover. It was to take the Lyrics and put their(Coldplay's) twist on it.

Perhaps I've always viewed Beastie Boys incorrectly. Basically they always seemed like more of a lighter version of Weird Al Yankovich to me, being a humorous twist on the Hardcore Rapper. If I'm wrong on that it's mostly because of my generalizing of Jewish people as Great Comedians. As such, if I'm correct on that view, I don't think they take their Music nearly as serious as you do.

That's fucking awful. Just like the Billie Jean cover.

Here is how you cover Billie Jean.

Holy crap, I hadn't heard that, but it's actually pretty awesome. Thanks!

Was decent except for the short fast strumming parts.

Yeah, that was a little odd.. but Cornell's singing easily made up for that. He has a great voice.

Yeah, it only happened twice. But it really broke up the flow of the song. Agreed though, it sounded good on the first listen, and I've never even heard of Cornell so I really have no bias.

A cover doesn't have to capture the essence at all, it can be a completely different take or genre. But it still has to be a *good song*, particularly coming from an established band like coldplay.

That song in itself, regardless of being a cover, was pointless and pure suck imo. Toss in the fact that it started as a very popular and successful song, its bizarre for coldplay to simply take the bars, slow it down, and throw it on the piano and call that music. That is the extent of their musical ability? You'd think there would be a little more thought and creativity put towards it (ie, less suck). They castrated billy jean too...again, wtf is their point in doing these covers 1/2-@ss.

As for Chris Cornell's cover of Billy Jean, that's how you do it! Even with any imperfections, love it or hate it, its a perfect approach to a cover. He brought his own soulfulness and interpretation, and made an excellent song out of it that makes sense (and personally I love it.)

If they were to make a Release of either Cover, I'm sure they'd up the Production values significantly, but both were Live Performances which are usually very different, even for an Artists' own Songs.

He gets it.

I agree with that. Problem, to a very large extent, in this Thread is that hating Coldplay is kinda trendy and from that point the judgement of this Cover is largely based. It's not a bad Cover being criticized, it's Coldplay itself being criticized. Not that there's anything wrong with not liking Coldplay, but there can be no Objective criticism of the Cover itself when those doing the Cover are pariahs.

It would be like Hitler doing the best Cover ever of the Best song ever. People would hate it, because it's fucking Hitler doing it. Hell, I might just hate it too.

We saw Coldplay last Thursday and had a great time. Piss on all of you. Of course they didn't cover the Beasties. 😉

There's plenty of that going on obviously. But I don't have anything against them and like some of their songs, altho seeing them on SNL was disappointing to find Chris Martin has as much charisma as cardboard. Another turning point in my mind tho was their billy jean cover after his death. Right idea, right time, horrific execution.

Generally tho, I love to see a high level of talent and creative genius (atleast how I like to interpret it), even if I don't necessarily like the genre or sound. I just don't find it here...and probably wouldn't in hitler's renditions either. 😉

Well, I suppose we'll always have the Hitler Cover to agree on! 😀
