This cold boot issue is weird. I have experience it before. It happened to my Asus P4T-E. I sold to a friend and it never happen on his system. I got an Abit Th7-II and it never did happen on that board. I got a 300w Sparkle psu btw.

I've got the same thing happening and I don't even have an 845PE board!! It's an ECS board with the crappiest VIA chipset ever, but that's another thread. I used this board for about 5 months with an antec 300w ps with no problems. Then I start getting these cold boot problems, so I get an antec true 430, and the problem persists.

If I hold the power button on the case for a couple seconds the first time, it helps, but if it doesn't work, it usually will the second time. After shutting down, and then turning it back on, it takes like 15 tries. I have to wait for an hour to get it to turn back on.

Just bought an albatron px845pe pro2, so hopefully this will solve the problem (fingers crossed, knock on wood, rub rabbit's foot :))

Has this issue just died or are people still experiencing "Cold Boot" problems? It's surprizing that a resolution has not been found yet...?

I bought a new power supply, bumped up from 300W to 400W, and for two or three weeks had no cold boot problems at all where I was having them every two or three power-ups before (Asus P4PE).

Now I have had the cold boot maybe three or four times in the last month, but since the weather warmed up, (my studio gets very cold overnight) it hasn't happened at all. Maybe there's no connection, maybe so...Another thing I do is hold in the power button for two or three seconds when I'm first turning on the unit. Maybe that's no factor either, but so far it hasn't choked since I"ve been doing it so I'm going to rub my lucky rabbit's foot and keep on keepin' on.

I had a no start issue I couldn't solve with an Epox 4PEA+ using an Antec 430w True. It was a strange problem that existed with the ATX connector. I played around with the connector half way in the slot and all the way in. Sometimes it would boot and other times not. I could never stabilize the problem. However, when switching to an Antec 400w SmartPower, all of the problems disappeared....no cold boots ever (in the last month of use). Figured there was some kind of electrical imbalance causing the problem (just my theory):)

:disgust:I have responded to the new thread about this problem above. I believe it to be a defect in the atx power connector. See above.

Funny thing is, the True works fine with my Epox 8KHA+....no cold boots, so, the connector doesn't appear to be the problem. I did notice that the default voltages for the SmartPower were higher than the True on the 8KHA+...and the SmartPower voltages were the same on both boards.....

I was just reading the review of the ASUS P4GX8 at vr-zone and found this in the conclusion of the article under performance and stability:

Another advantage of this is that the Asus board is probably the only P4 boards in the market without the Cold/Warm boot issue. They have the VCore settings higher up in the boot process than other boards to avoid this. Asetek discovered this and Asus responded. Anyone not familiar with the Cold/Warm boot issue? It has plagued alot of boards because the VCore settings are not high up enough in the boot process resulting in a no boot. There are workarounds for this, mainly either through modifying the board via the voltage regulator or via the Vid Pin Mod...

linked here

So is this confirmed to be the issue, and will other companies follow suit?

Come to think of it, I recall reading this as a workaround for people overclocking with Asus socket 370 Tualatin motherboards, where the board would POST with default voltage before switching to any higher voltage specified in BIOS. Problem was that some CPUs would overclock just fine with more vcore but would not POST without more vcore. So, wire wrap the CPU so the board POSTs with higher voltage would solve the problem. I'm wondering if doing this would help all these 845PE motherboards. I have noticed that MANY motherboards undervolt. Some people have had the problem go away with a power supply change, which makes sense. Recently I upgraded my GF's computer from the default 180W Powerman power supply (in a mATX InWin case with a P4 2.4GHz) to an Antec True330 and noticed that the detected vcore went up from 1.48 with the old power supply to 1.50 with the Antec. She didn't have cold boot issues, but did have some other stability issues that were solved by the new power supply (issues started after upgrading her CPU from 1.6A to 2.4, guess the 180W power supply couldn't handle it).

If I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times, the surest solution for your cold boot problems is to crunch a DC project for TeAm Anandtech 24/7/365 :D I have a P4PE/L and have no idea if it suffers from the issue or not 'cause it's always crunchin' ;)[/shameless recruiting]
