Cold Boot Problem and 845PE mobos

My GF's AOpen MX4B had this problem when overclocked (845D chipset). Very minor with a PS/2 mouse, would almost NEVER POST with a USB mouse. Default speeds are fine. Tried two power supplies, one PowerMan (comes with InWin case) and one Eagle (comes with some generic case). A buddy of mine with a Shuttle board (AK35GT2 or something, KT333 chipset) has this problem on occasion with a Powmax power supply. He isn't even overclocked. If it doesn't POST, then nothing will get it to POST again until the power supply is unhooked from the motherboard, then plugged back in - like the problem Hamburgerpimp experienced.

I think the cold boot issue has a lot to do with PS Units. It may very well be a memory issue, as well. But, I've seen a lot of people solve it with changing the power supply. I never had the issue until I tested an Antec True PS in my system. I immediately put back in my Enermax and instantly solved. No cold boot problem anymore. I would be curious to see what PS people with this issue are running!

I've discovered it to be an Antec problem
anyone who seems to have a problem ends up having an Antec PS.
I have an Antec Smart fan 400W (2 years old) and 50% of the time i have cold boot troubles.

I read the thread over at Asus forums and there was no pattern to power supplies with the problem..there were older Antec, Enermax, generic PS and even one guy with 550 w PS
Hamburgerpimp you are the first I think with an Antec True PS..what was it rated at...I am getting an Abit IT7 Max2 Ver2 and have a ANtec True PS 480w...and radeon 9700 pro...(also there this may be an issue with videocards or combo ps, mobo , videocard..some with radeon 9700, geforce4 4600 and 845PE seemed to see this more commonly???)

I am having a cold boot problem now with my KR7A-RAID and Antec 480w PS and radeon 9700 with 4 fans going....oddly if I hooked up my 5 fan to fan only off ps I would get no boot..I should point many can not get the KR7A to run the radeon 9700 pro at all....also the several days it happened once but last 2 days it has happened....it has been in my system about 18 days..so 3 cold boot problems 5 none....I also have fans hooked up on the molex to radeon and this maybe an issue....but hitting the reset button and it boots right away..samll pain....

Is there a downside to the cold boot problem..like will trying to boot and then resetting cause hardware failure of other components....if not ...I am not that concerned..I would be more concerned with a warm boot problem....

I have 2 Albatron 845pe mobos (see sigs below) and never had a cold boot problem with both rigs overclocked. One has an Enermax 431w and the other has a 300w Deerfield (maybe not, but I don't care as long as it works and has decent voltages.)

It was an Antec True 480W. Funny, because that PS wouldn't let one of my other systems boot. I just said screw it and took it back. I know the Antec True PS is a better unit than anything out there, but I've never had a single problem with my Enermax. They're both made in China!

Reading these posts makes me a tad nervous..... I just put together an IWill P4HT with a 2.4B, one stick of 512 Cosair 2700, and a 380w True Power. After one week - no cold boot problem, but I feel now since it's implied that this is an across the board problem with all 845pe boards, not just some, that once I start cranking up the fsb or switch my ti4400 to something bigger, I'll get the cold boot problem. So far, I've cautiously pushed up to a fsb of 140 and I might just leave it there than do something that may start problems (even though I know that it can occur even without overclocking). Everything has been smooth sailing so far.... hope it stays that way.

I don't have cold boot problems on the Albatron boards either... It's a really retarded, strange issue.
it's almost like it's a very large co-incidence...

although it's too much to be..

well in my case, i sold my IT7 max2 v2.0 so i can try the BE7 raid .. i never had a single cold boot problem with the IT7 for the whole month i had it and it was super stable.... but with the be7, i would get a cold boot problem at least 4 times/week....im using the same setup except the mobos....now after reading this thread about 845PE, im having a second thought about getting an IT7 again... i think i would rather get the p4b533 raid this time..... i was actually planning to get any GB board but im getting impatient.....so back to 845e.. 🙁

I've tried a series of things with my BE7 this week that I'd seen suggested in this and other threads (new CW bios, reseating power connectors, reseating RAM & video card, various CPU and RAM voltages) but none of these changes initially seemed to have fixed the problem.

I was about to try swapping out my new 360W Thermaltake PSU for an old 300W Enlight that I've got hanging around, but in the last day or two the problem seems to be getting better by itself - I now get about one failure in every 3 or 4 cold boots rather than every single time as it was last week. Since every component in the system (apart from the drives) was brand new, perhaps this is something that gets better as parts burn in? All seems very odd. Everything is still at stock speeds as the moment, so hopefully it won't get worse again when I try some ocing.

Well, I thought I would breath a little more life into this thread in an attempt to see if someone can solve these problems. I have a Gigabyte 8PE667 with an Enermax 431w PS. In my case I think it may be a function of the power supply and the mobo. If I overclock (2.4@2.88 with 1.675v) I have the cold boot problem. If I leave everything stock no problems. If it means anything I also have two memory slots filled with 512MB of ram each.

After playing w/ my gigabyte board 667 Ultra here are the results:

Hardware specs:
2x 512 Mushkin pc2700
P4 2.0a @ 150 for 3 GHz
145 for 2.9
140 for 2.8

2.8 Requires a cold boot if usb 2.0 is enabled
2.9 Same
3.0 Requires a cold boot no matter what.

Maybe this sheds some light on the subject...

LOL Maybe I should add some cooling to the USB 2.0 chip and see if it fixes the problem

I Just went to a Albatron PX845PEV Pro motherboard and with the same power supply the cold boot problems have dissapeared!!!! Yea! This is a great board and under 90$ at NewEgg a great deal too.

Same mobo and I have no cold boot problem too 😀

Edit- I am also using Generic 600W

I have NEVER had a cold boot problem........................Then My Generic 250W PS blew and I have had to turn the PS on and off to get the darn thing to boot. now I can not boot with the the printer attached to the mobo🙁 think the power supply got that port when it went) now I have had this rig for almost 2 years and the only problem was a crappy S3 vid card that I promptly tossed into the garbage🙂 guess its time for another mobo just so the kids can surf the net. heres the rig that has cold boot probs now:
DFI AK70 mobo slot a....yes Slot A
Athlon 700 processor
384 pc100 mem
8/4/32 creative burner
50x cd rom
TNT 2 m64 vid

they are fantastic boards.
Albatron is a great low priced, good stable mobo... no doubt about it 🙂

my EPoX has this cold boot BS.. but i am confident if I get a new PSU, it will go away. 🙂

P2.4@3.0ghz at 1.65 in bios actual is 1.63 load drops to 1.60v...
IT7Max2 Rev2..undervolts
Crucial PC2100 DDR 2x 256 at 2.7v at cas2.5/3/3/6..run memtest 86 default 7 tests for 2 loops no issues but need to do it longer as the extra tests stress the memory for hrs
Radeon 9700
3HDD 80gb 7200rpm DX740 Maxtor on serial ATA via adapter..master
80 gb WD 7200 rpmSE master
120gb Maxtor 5400 rpm master....all 3 HDD are on HPT 374 controller
LTD 16x DVD
Liteon 52246S
Aureal Vortex 2 works in winxp....snds very nice
SCSI adaptec 2906 for my scanner
Onboard realtek NIC
Onboard IEEE 1394
USB2
5 fans..3 sunon at full speed, 2 antec on fan control by PS
Antec True Power 480 w
WinXP

I highly recommend this mobo...zero cold boot problems so far after a week
Very easy seup and very stable so far..though it seems to read temps higher
I had a KR7A raid in same case Antec SX830 with 5 fans..it was overclocked at 147 fsb and case temps were from 8-10C cooler vs IT7 Max2 rev2

The onboard sound is ok...but I love my Vortex 2 and it worked with NOLF2 and in winxp

Notice I am using an Antec PS..so hopeful I will not develop an issue...I am guessing since Abit moved to rev2 and advertises this distinction that there were some improvents to the mobo ...I do know they changed some moffets and capacitors for better Intel HT support and it is a 4 phase power supply setup so I am bet this helps too

Greetings ColdBootBummers wherever you are.

I too have experienced the annoying cold boot on my Asus P4PE (P4 2.4 533, clocked normal, 2 sticks 512 Samsun 2700 DDR memory, in slots 1 & 2 as suggested in the manual).

My experience truly is a "cold boot", as it mostly seems to happen when my studio hasn't warmed up yet (I live in upstate New York, where cold boots has another meaning too).

It's always a case of powering off, waiting till the fans spin down, trying again...rarely takes more than one more try to get that happy little post beep, but it is a bit unnerving.

I've got an older Antec 300W power supply, I'm going to replace it because it's got a bad lead in it I think...both the floppy and the DVD went bad right after I installed the mobo, no power to either...I switched the power plugs around, now both are working fine again...wierd, huh? Maybe I just need some more juice in general, I've got a lot of stuff in my tower.

good luck to us all solving this mysterious problem

and Happy Good Boots New Year

my latest experience: I replaced my 300w PS with an Antec Smart Power 400w PS from STaples (on sale for $39!). I've booted up 10 or 15 times since then, not one cold boot, whereas I'd had them frequently before on my new P4PE board. I bet this has something to do with power, or perhaps sufficient power, or perhaps having the right ATX power supply with the square 4-pin cpu power plug to the mobo. I was using the traditional power plug in the EZ plug before, maybe that was the problem...but who cares? At least it's working now.

I shall break the trend and say I DO hve a problem with coldbootin on the P4B533-E.

P4 2.53 @ 2.8
DDR 400
Enermax Whisper 330w

I have to switch it off and wait 5 sec, then turn it back on to boot.

I've unfortunately got cold boot problems now too...

Rig:
Austin 450W PSU
Powercolor Radeon 9700 Pro
AMD Athlon 1700+ (OCed to 2200+ or greater, 166Mhz x11)
Asus A7N8X Deluxe Motherboard
512MB Corsair XMS DDR400/pc3200 (2x 256mb sticks)
Western Digital WD800BBRTL 7200RPM 80GB Hard Drive
Mitsumi CR-4802TE 12x read, 4x write CD-RW
Lite-On LTD-166S16X 16x DVD read, 48x CD read
Windows 2000 Professional

I've tried different BIOSes, and a new mobo battery to no avail... god this sucks. I too have to do that thing where you hold the power button & try again. My system also likes to boot with the FSB set to 100Mhz when it does boot, which requires me to enter/exit the BIOS in order to boot with the right FSB.

At first I didn't have these issues... then the 100Mhz thing popped up, then after a BIOS change the being forced to restart the computer thing appeared.

Still trying to solve this without having to RMA. RMAing would be very costly and time consuming, I'd have to clean the thermal pad crap off the HSF/CPU, buy Arctic Silver III, pay shipping for the mobo to be RMAed, take everything apart, recconnect, not have my PC while I wait for new mobo.... ughhhh........
