Health has nothing to do with it. The saccharides of HFCS and cane sugar are chemically identical. The difference between the 2 is not much more than the difference between cane sugar and beet sugar.
The legitimate reason for the health outrage over HFCS is that it's so cheap and plentiful that it is literally everywhere and in everything. Especially if you're eating a lot processed or prepared foods, you're going to be eating a lot more sugar than the human body is used to naturally. Combine that with a stressful yet sedentary lifestyle, and you're going to get health problems like obesity and diabetes. So quit blaming conspiracy theories, watch your diet and get in the frackin' gym!
Actually HFCS is closer to Honey than Cane or Beet Sugar.
The difference is that sucrose is a disaccharide with a 50/50 split between fructose and glucose.
The HFCS in coke is 55%glucose, 45%fructose and comes in a monosaccharide form so the two compontnets are not linked together with a weak chemical bond.
In the stomach, sucrose breaks into its base sucrose and glucose ingredients creating monosaccharides, so it becomes even more similar once in your body.
Overall though, they both are chemical similar, though not identical and provide roughly the same amount of calories in dried form (4kcal per g) whilst HFCS in it's syrup form provides only 3kcal per g.
The truth behind the health issues is that any sort of sugar consumed in high amounts will cause health problems and both have the same effects.
