Coffe cup going across the screen, can't remove it, even after reformatting. HELP ME PLEASE!!!

This is happening in one of my friend's pc, I run the AV (Norton), doing a full scan and nothing, no virus found, I FDISK the HDD, then I deleted the partitions, and re create then, did a full format, and even when I was doing this, the freaking coffe cup was going across the screen, I can't even put the cursor in top of that to see if I can remove it somehow, bbut with no luck.
Anybody might be able to help out to find a solution to this problem.

check if its a program at startup under your startup programs folder. if its a win9x system, start->run "msconfig" and check what files are being accessed at boot time, also, poke around in the registry, you are bound to find a refernce to the cup, if cant just appear from fuc[/b]king thin air.

Did you do an anti-viral scan of the floppy boot disk that you're using to do the fdisk and format, to ensure that it's not infected with a virus, especially something like a memory-resident virus?

It can't be a virus on yor hard drive if it was goin across while formating. What kind of monitor is it?

Is a 17'Optimus. That's the only info that I can give you. Someone in another forum, mentioned that it might be at the CMOS, and to try to clear it, I don't know about that, I might try it. In my opinion it could be in the MBR. But since I formatted the HDD I thought it should have erase it.

u need to perform a low-level format to erase the MBR; utility can be found at hdd manufature's site

make a boot disk with some other machine, disconnect the hdd, and boot up, is it still there?

Never tried it myself, but I'm pretty sure there's no need for a low-level format to delete the MBR.

If the &quot;coffee cup&quot; really was moving across the screen WHILE you were formatting (from DOS or from within Windows setup? in other words black background or light background?), this has to be electromagnetic interference. How clearly defined is this &quot;object&quot;? Is any other pattern visible? Over what span of time was this occurring? Did you try moving the system to another location? The reason I ask about duration of the phenomenon is that it sounds like a Folger's commercial or some such. But if the duration is over a long period of time, we're moving into the realm of -- dare I say it -- hoax. Is it possible that someone is playing a practical joke using one of those little &quot;rabbit&quot; transmitter? Does the system have a TV tuner? (I have evil friends. Elaborate practical jokes are the most fun way to screw over a buddy.)

To Tominator: I don't heard any noise, but yes it goes to the middle of the screen and then back from where it come from (right side of the screen).

To AC: sorry I don't have a digital camera (will try to get one).

To JayWallen: is really solid, when I try to put my cursor in top of the mug, it dissapear under it.And it goes and come back with certain pattern, like at the same time over and over again (every minute and half or so), and the pc is not near any TV and nobody could be doing any hoax, my friend is not a kind of person that might do things like that.

If you can, try a different monitor and if that doesn't isolate it, swap out the video card for another.

It has onboard video. But I will try another monitor, but if that is the case, it will be the first time for me to see somethings like this happennings, ant then the questions, how to get it off the monitor?

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that your friend was perpetrating a hoax. I was thinking along the lines of a third party. (Maybe you guys don't have as many weird friends as I have.)

I'm still not sure about your answer to my question about whether or not this coffee cup appears on a DOS screen. If you boot up with a DOS diskette, do you see anything like this image on the screen?

I hope you get this figured out, because the answer would have to belong in my favorite trivia file!

Yes, the coffe mug appears even when at DOS mode, for instance, when I was formatting the HDD, that piece of crap when across the screen like making fun of me, and I couldn't do anything about it.
And if I reboot with a bootable floppy, and just wait to see what happens, after a while, here comes that fraking mug.

This is a long shot...

I saw a &quot;virus&quot; going around that was quite clever. It loaded itself (un detectable in MsConfig) and made you type &quot;I am f*cking gay&quot; over and over again. The way to stop it was to typ &quot;STOP&quot;. Just a thought.

How definited is it? Like a 2 colors bmp pr like a normal pic? If is kinda of a bad pic, might be in your CMOS (with the bios) , ever flashed a mobo b4?

It definitely shows up in msconfig, it's under the run branch.

Anyways, that was identified some time ago and labeled &quot;keypanic.trojan&quot; by some AV companies.

In any case, it isn't this coffee cup thing
