is it at all possible to have a BIOS virus?

a virus in the master boot that executes the virus on boot would make more sense, such as a drive overlay program

Anything is possible... anything. :)
Seems like a really good idea to write a virus that installs some code in the BIOS, but that would be mighty tricky.

I might be wrong, but to have a virus writing his dirty code, you need to infect the mbr, and at the next restart do it and reset, while in dos mode.
Or maybe during shutdown.....

E-mail me the picture and I can put it on my webpage for you, and then you can link to it from there, no need to sign up for a free webhosting service.

I would bet anything on that being a monitor feature gone nuts. Hook up the monitor to another machine, d00d. :)

Yeah, I agree with Killbat. I've never seen a monitor that did this, though I've sure been around a long time. I was thinking of this as a larger image and more highly detailed, which is why I was considering it to be a result of external interference. But this doesn't look like a transmitted image. There's no (apparent) change in the desktop background color or anything.

Regards,
Jim

It`s got to be the monitor, anyone with on screen display if you put your mouse cursor on it it disappears so this is what he was describing.

Too bad to be an inerference, and way too god to be in the BIOS.
must be in the monitor, somewhere.

This is a monitor feature, in looking at the screen shot my guess would be the last button on the right (the unmarked one) should eliminate the scrolling coffee cup.

RE: BIOS viruses, most new systems come with write to rom disabled so even if a virus could sneak in there..well...it couldn't.

I'm new here, this is my first posting but gads, you people scare me. Aliens? Voodoo? Stop looking for the conspiracy theory and think simple.

Here is a possible solution I found while doing a quick check on deja.

"By any chance is the monitor a Relisys? You may want to go to your on-screen menu on your monitor by pressing Menu on your monitor. Then press menu around 9 times until you get to an icon that looks like a wrench and a hammer. At the bottom of the menu you'll see a picture of a coffee cup. Next to it, you'll see a value other than 0. Press your down arrow button on your monitor five times (or until the coffee cup is highlighted). Now change the value from whatever it is now to zero. Press Menu one more time, then press any other button to exit.

The feature is called "Tea Time". I think it is just an indicator to take a break. It will scroll a coffee cup (or in this case, a tea cup) across your screen until it sits in the middle of your screen at the bottom. Then it will sit there for about five to ten seconds (a little graphic of steam will gradually disappear), then the graphic will scroll back the way it came from. Turning off the tea time feature gets rid of the graphics."

LostBoy, I remember seeing that thread on deja also, but since the OP said it was an Optimus monitor (not a Relisys) I didn't mention it (I should have, in hindsight). I couldn't find anything about Optimus brand monitors with a web search.

But after seeing the picture, it really, really looks like something that comes from the monitor. I'm in agreement with the other posters that it's a monitor feature.
