Yep, a lot of places stop serving food at 7 or so and go to booze only. This allows people to smoke while they drink. I don't smoke, and I don't like breathing in other people's smoke, but I dont' have to go to bars. If I don't want to inhale smoke, I don't go to bars. Simple.

the same sort of by-law was passed in our city about 2 years ago. Businesses bitched and complained, but in the end, bars and restaurants gained about 10-15% in the first year in patronage, as non-smoking families were venturing back out to eat and socialize...

I smoke occasionally, and don't mind having to go outside... I forbid anyone smoking in our home.

again, there is not an ounce of proof anywhere that second hand smoke has a negative health effect on anyone. many studies have been commissioned and yet not a single one has found anything. the WHO buried the results of their own study. ask yourself why? all these people have been running around trying to find a huge devil and they haven't been able to find it. the only reasonable assumption is that said devil does not exist

You need to see table 1 on this CDC report.

EDIT:The truth confirms that in the US, about 50,000 people die from secondhand-smoke-related disease.

I dont drink and I think anyone that drinks is a POS and I would support legislation that would ban all drinking except inside your homes.

Drink 2 beers at the bar, get in your car, kill a family. That is proven.

People get drunk in bars and kill or maim employees and other customers.

I have to pick beer cans up from my yard.

While those are not really my views they are similar to the same things others have read here just using a different substance.

I dont go to bars because I dont like dealing with obnoxious impaired people, and that infringes on my rights.

I don't run around flaulting my negative attitude toward drinkers though because I have tolerance for others.

I believe this should have been a choice by owners.

I do smoke and since I usually dont smoke inside public bldgs it really makes no difference to me.

It simply has become fashionable to bash smokers, some like the fad, others could care less.

What does a ban in Canada have to do with me picking up beer cans in my yard or drunk/ impaired drivers in the USA?

Why?

And better yet, why should it on private property?

You have to ask why? Are you that dense?

Again...if you think that my right to breathe poison-free air doesn't superceed the smokers right to smoke....well then I suppose I get to staple a bag of dog poo to all the smokers lips so they have to smell that all the time.

If they can be so disrespectful to other people and think that it is okay, then I should get to make them smell the most horrid smell I can come up with...that's only fair right?

Private property as in a persons home...I don't care. Smoke in your house all you want.

Private property as in a bar/restaurant/store....they are open to the public and smokers shouldn't be allowed to smoke there.

I suppose you are one of those littering smokers too? Do you have any idea how many smokers I see toss butts out the window of their car, or just anywhere on the street? They should be fined for that.

Again, why does your right supercede anothers right on private property?

You are no more guaranteed by the Constitution to breathe in stink-free air than you are to be able to smoke a cigarette.

It comes down to government infringing on the rights of private property owners.

And guess what, I only smoke once every few months, while I drink. I also throw my butts into the empty beer bottles. But way to sidestep the issue in an attempt at a flame.

it is absolutely nasty. the consumption of it is of no benefit whatsoever to the human body. in fact every study ever done on consumption of it shows that it is completely detrimental to the human body. millions of people die every year from the ill effects of consumption.

it is a LEMMING habit. that has been passed on for decades. it is about time we make a smart choice as a society and stop passing this bad habit on to future generations.

THAT"S THE BOTTOM LINE.

I'm going to write my Congressman and ask him to pass a law banning alcohol, preservatives, and snack foods.

They are a LEMMING habit. that has been passed on for decades. it is about time we make a smart choice as a society and stop passing these bad habits on to future generations.

I'm with ya buddy. strictly vegetarian here. i don't consume any processed foods. I'm 30 and I look like i'm 20. I love it. I love seeing my old friends from high school and watching them rot from the inside out. you know why i think it's funny. cuz they are the ones who laugh at me when i say i'm a vegetarian.

We as a society have gotten so far off track. convenience foods might have saved us time, but at the same time, they are shaving years off of peoples lives.

I can sit next to you at a bar and drink 4 beers and you won't feel a thing.

I can sit next to you and pound 5 Big Macs and you won't gain an ounce.

You can sit next to me and slam asparagus and I will not get the vitamins.

Either one of us smoke next to each other and it affects both of us PERIOD.

And if I sit next to you doing any of those activities, my sense of smell is going to be affected. I'll get the stink of Big Mac, Alcohol, or asparagus on me. I mean that is what this is about, right? The stink and the smell.

Show me a study that proves second hand smoke actually causes long term side effects, or that it is directly a cause of the deaths of people.

It went through democratic process and was voted on. The ban won. That's how laws are made. Nobody's rights were trampled.
Just because a measure was approved by a panel of representatives, doesn't mean that private citizen's rights weren't trampled in the process.

The goverment in Jersey took away the rights of private businesses to allow smoking in their establishment. You don't see that as "trampling over the rights of the minority"? The term "minority" in this context refers to business owners and those that oppose the new law.

And if not those private citizens then who voted those representatives in office? You voted them in so that they can vote on your behalf. The margin of the vote is huge, so I don't think there is any "rights" issues to discuss here.

Where does the constitution give you the right to smoke and emit disgusting substances around others?

Oh man, you are right. We had better stop driving cars, since god knows they emit disgusting substances, and they definitely aren't mentioned in the Constitution. What were we thinking?

Yeah...better ignore context and previous posts too while we're at it.

How does public health = morality?
The public isn't forced to work or patronize an establishment where smoking is allowed.

Owners should get the choice if their establishment allows smoking or not.

End of story. You cannot argue the point beyond that.

I can and will. If one wants to be able to smoke...they should be required to be considerate of thhose who do not wish to inhale their smoke. Plain and simple.

Until a device is created that will remove all exhaled smoke so that others don't have to breathe it....then smokers should have thier bad habbit confied to their own personal property (eg. their homes).

Why is it OK for a person who owns their home to decide if someome can smoke or not in their house, but it's not OK for a person who owns a business to decide if customers can smoke or not in it?
