CoD4 Multiplayer FPS Dips

Swift

Junior Member
Hey guys, I'm new here and I searched the place but didn't find anything similar to my problem.
Whenever I play Cod4 multiplayer, I usually get 90FPS upwards average but the gameplay stutters. I check the fps meter and it says that it goes down to 30s or even 20s for a second. I've tried reinstalling Cod4 and updated my drivers but the problem still remains.

System Specs:
Q6600 3.0ghz, Palit 4850 stock, Asus P5Q Vanilla, WD 1TB, FSP 500W PSU.

Whenever I play other games, it never happens. I'm stuck here guys, anyone have any idea what's happening? Thanks.

You got a point there. I'm using an arctic cooling freezer 7 pro and it doesn't help much in keeping the temps down. Well I'll try first to put it back to stock settings and see if it works.

The stuttering is still there even at stock settings. Temps are pretty good now even under load. Any other ideas?

Does the sutter seem to have any correlation to what happens on screen? For instance, I'll experience a stutter in TF2 if I'm (first) rounding a corner into a larger area, and I'm under the assumption that data is being transferred from system RAM to VRAM.

How much system RAM do you have?

Have you tried disabling any background apps?

Does it still stutter if you lower any of the graphical settings?

Yeah, the stuttering sometimes occurs when an explosion occurs but usually it just happens when I walk around. I'm using 4GB of ram right now, 3.2gb since it's XP 32bit only. Lowering graphics settings don't work. I'm on 4x AA 16X AF, tried 0x 0x still the same. I'm gonna try disabling background apps now.

Disabled some and it did help a bit. But then the computer just hung and I had to restart it. I'm going nuts here, I've had this computer for more than a year and it didn't give this kind of problem before. Any more suggestions?

Stock settings or not, my money is still on the temps, betting one of your clips came off on your HSF.

You could download

occt

It will show you your temps and allow you to stress your CPU with graphs.

or you could look at the clips on your HSF and see if one is loose.

Temps are extremely easy to rule out. I highly doubt COD4 is stressing your CPU to the point that it is throttling, unless you didnt install the HSF properly.

GPU temps would be a better guess, but you said they are OK.......

Because it is COD4 specific, are you sure it isnt just one of the more detailed maps?

My buddy who has a q8200 and Cooler Master tx2 was getting exactly the same lag spikes. He too would not get it in other games. I told him to check his temps and they were idling in the 60s and loading in the 80-90s. Turns out, one of his pins popped out. Once his cooling was sorted out, everything was fine.

Hmm, are sure it doesn't happen in other games? What about Source games like L4D or TF2?

If it doesn't happen in other games the first thing I would have done is reinstall CoD4. Then reinstall and/or try different drivers. Then I would have checked hardware solutions, like GPU temps and CPU temps.

Seems a bit out of order, considering it takes about 3 min to download a program and test the temperatures, while it takes well over an hour to install COD4 and all the patches.

Yea, I was going to say...

It's the only game he's having problems in........ so far. And we've (you) have already asked him to check temperatures. He said they were pretty good. The next step of all the things anyone has mentioned is to just reinstall the game. My scenario is what I would have done. I wouldn't have checked the CPU temps if only one game was giving me a problem.

A non-loaded q6600 the temps can be pretty good even with poor cooling. Until the OP checks under stress with a program the reads the temps correctly, I'm unwilling to discount it as a possible issue. I would like to hear the numbers basically.

CPU temp problems would show up in other games. COD4 isnt exactly the Intel Burn test.

I know it's just so similar to my friends issue. It's hard for me to discount it without the numbers. The now the computer just hung last statement kind of affirmed my feeling. Then again that can be caused by ram as well.

Whoa, thanks for the replies guys.
Here's what I've done so far. 1.) Reinstalled COD4 up to 1.7 patch. 2.) Updated ATI drivers to 9.8 using safe mode uninstall and even used driver sweeper also in safe mode.

With regards to whether this happens in other games as well, it doesn't. Right now, the only other game I play is Dawn of Discovery (Anno 1404) and it doesn't have the stuttering issues experienced in COD4, I get constant frames even if they are from the 30s to the 60s only, no dips. I'll try a more demanding game such as GTAIV later to check.

Now, for temps, I'll try to give you the numbers.
GPU temp at idle is around 40c more or less. Load with COD4, max I saw with Rivatuner monitor is in this 50s up to around 55.
CPU Temp idle around 40-45c with a higher than average ambient temp. I remember alt-tabbing from COD4 and checking coretemp immediately and it showed around 55 and max of 60. Note the high ambient of around 30c+ (I'm in a tropical country). *I'll try using OCCT to verify the temps later as well*.

I'm thinking it might either be an isolated COD4 issue, my power supply, graphics card, or ram.
I did remember seeing some artifacting at 720/1100 frequency with a COD4 Map (Creek) but I reverted to stock and it was back, never saw it again. My power supply might be degrading but an FSP 500w should be enough for a 3ghz Q6600, a stock 4850, P5Q, 1TB HD, 1 optical driver, 4 case fans, 2x2gb ddr2 800 ram right? The only overclocked part was the Q6600 anyway.

This really makes me stressed out since COD4 is my favorite game and it sucks that it stutters a few times a minute. The hanging issue though is quite random. Oh I do remember experiencing a virus attack before but I got that all cleared out I think. Thanks for your insights guys.

Manual meaning the pbudate program with the blue icon right? Yeah, I did immediately after patching up to 1.7.

Psychic ^

I mean downloading pbsetup from evenbalance, adding the game, then manually updating it.

I don't know what the blue icon is.

Haha, sorry something went wrong with the reply I guess. Yup, I downloaded the pbsetup from evenbalance and manually added and updated COD4. My pbsetup is quite old though, but I'm assuming it still works the same.

No, I'll try later though. STUTTER FEST FTW! This is nuts, Am I the only COD4 player in the world experiencing this right now?
