i was just watching the movie Blow and got to thinking, why is cocaine always imported from other countries? i mean if people grow bushes of cocaine plants in their backyard no one is going to recognize it since it just looks like any other plant. they can strip the leaves and process it in thier home if it doesnt require too much equipment or electricity.
 
I believe the process of actually converting the plant to a drug is a bit larger then one could secretly do in their home, same with opiate based drugs.
 
Well don't quote me on this, but I would imagine the plant requires a certain environment in order to survive. So maybe it doesn't grow very well in North America, which explains why it always seems to be imported.

Good question, and I'm not entirely sure, but if I had to venture to guess...

It must take a lot of coca plant material to make any significant amount of cocaine.

That's the only thing that makes sense, otherwise people most certainly would have indoor and outdoor growing operations like they do marijuana.

Another reason is that the plant is probably hard to cultivate except in certain climates, while marijuana will grow literally anywhere.

Nah.

It's just a recipe. You could do it on a large, or small scale. A small scale marijuana operation can be profitable because it's the actual plant material that is valuable, there is no secondary processing.

The problem with small scale is that it isn't very profitable.

It thrives at higher elevations. The Andes, for example...
 
I'm no expert on the cultivation and processing of Coca leaves and cocaine, but it looks like it requires a large amount of leaves and the processing is probably hard to disguise with the all the chemicals being used.

It is dirt cheap in Columbia and is fairly easy to traffic to the US. You would need a large harvest in order to keep up with the quantities that are shipped from outside of the US.

now, let's be realistic here: Coca plants do not produce poppies, right? The Andeans pretty much roll and chew on the leaves.

coca = cocaine, poppies = opium.

And AFAIK poppies are not illegal, but cutting them is.
 
poppys have nothing to do with coke.

poppys are where opiate drugs come from....

cocaine is a stimulant, from the coca plant...

and whoever said it would take a more plant material to make a decent usable amount was right...

there's vids of the manufacturing process online.. see for yourself....

morphine to diacetyl-morphine is an easy process though... easy enough anyway...

raw opium to morphine or dia-morphine is NOT an easy process though... but if you were growing poppies you could just collect the raw opium gum and smoke it..

I wonder why politicians haven't said a word why we are sending $$$ oversea to nefarious drug lords, we need to produce our own white powder, and then we can tax it too.
 
All the people that have tried that are now cowering in their basements, totally berserk, waiting for "something" to come and get them.

Neither is "raw opium." It takes quite a bit of processing to get to the stage of "medicinal quality," but you're right in the sense that they are both made FROM raw opium.


There was a guy busted here a few months ago for growing opium poppies in his yard. He was from somewhere in Southeast Asia and had quite a poppy garden...and some refined opium...
