Seems to be a pretty cool guy and is the assistant IT director so money shouldn't be an issue. When we ask him about it he just turns it into a racial joke on why he refuses to tip. Yet last week when eating at a chinese fast food place he complained about having to throw way our own trash.

Why is that last part included, since you don't tip at fast food places anyway?

And why is management at your company making racial jokes?

Maybe he feels he should pay the amount listed on the menu for the items ordered and not some magical extra amount that isn't listed anywhere.

Tipping USED to be incentive for the waiter/waitress to do a good job - now days everyone has been programmed to tip automatically regardless of what service they get. Result? Service has gone down and people who don't tip are labeled "ass hats".

If he is making jokes while out to lunch he is just a guy making a joke. If he does it at a staff meeting then yeah, it's a problem.

Pay more for the food then and have it already included in. Most restaurants pay the waiters and waitresses below minimum wage because they figure in tips...

Damn, a tipping and race thread in one. Someone bring religion into it and I'll invest heavily into this thread.

It's a con. The restaurant gets to pay the waiter/waitress below minimum wage with the assumption that the consumer will automatically tip.

That depends greatly on the manner and nature of the joke and his actions while out. If his behavior negatively affects the perceptions of his co-workers, he could be fired.

This recently happened to a co-worker of one of my wife's friends. She was taken out by some managers and co-workers to welcome her to the company and reward her for the hard work she had done since joining. The girl got a little tipsy and said some very embarrassing/personal/offensive things which resulted in the girl getting fired a couple of days later. The managers felt that based on her behavior, they couldn't trust the girl if she ever went out with a client and she had seriously messed up relations with some of the people in the office.

I agree--however, know your state's laws. Sometimes they are relying on your tip, sometimes they just want you to THINK that.

In the OP's case, California has a MINIMUM cash wage of $8/hr, with tips on top of that.

If they paid them more then they would have to raise the prices of the food to compensate...

So you would be paying it anyways, without any incentive for them to do a good job. I have tipped anywhere from 5-30%

that is where people forget that at a certain point, you become the image of your company. Management shouldn't be making racial jokes around other company employees (or anyone for that matter)

Charge a fair price for food
Pay your employees a fair wage
End Tipping!

The federal minimum wage laws (as well as the state if they are higher than the fed) require that waitstaff make the minimum. If they don't make at least the minimum when tips are taken into account, the employer has to kick in extra to bring their hourly wage rate up to meet the minimum.

I usually find a few good places that I like to eat, and when I decide I'm going to patronize that establishment regularly, I become a pretty big tipper. Invariably, it gets noticed by the service staff, and I get superb treatment because of it.

I had a sushi place I used to go to when I lived in California. Excellent sushi, really. My roommate and I always made sure to take good care of the service people. It wasn't long before all the chefs knew us by name, they would loudly shout their greetings to us from behind the bar whenever we entered the place, and they would always, ALWAYS comp us some free sushi plates of stuff that was never even on the menu. They would simply hand us a plate of some delicious and original sushi and say "we made this special, for you."

Y'know how cool it is to take a new girl on a date to a place where they automatically treat you (and her, because she is with you) like royalty from the moment you enter? And not just like they're kiss your ass because you are a customer, but really obviously they treat you differently -- head and shoulders above the rest of the customers. To me, that's worth every extra dollar I spent in tipping the hell out of them.

You can get the same treatment for less. Just go to the maitre'd the day before the big date, give him $50 and explain you want royal treatment tomorrow when you come back with your date, and you will make sure everyone is taken care of. That way you get the first-class treatment and you don't even have to be a regular.

If he doesn't tip, you shouldn't go out to eat with him. The waitstaff will remember him, and do bad things to his food / make sure it's nice and cold before bringing it out.

People who don't tip in America are fucktards. Australians don't really need to tip because the waitstaff actually get paid decently, instead of the $3.15 they make here.

I didn't know that employers had to kick in extra to supplement tips in order to meet minimum wage guidlines, so I've learned something new today. however, I need to start checking into the salaries of the staff at some of the places I eat. when we go to a buffet and the waiter occasionally refills my drink and removes my plate, I'm not sure why I should tip them 15%.
