By "bolt-action" do you mean a rifle that you have to work the bolt after every shot to eject and reload? That isn't semi-auto.

Such brilliant commentary.

You seem to be implying (1) that there's something worthwhile to discuss here and (2) that you're jealous of guy ritchie's relationship with Madonna. Let it go.

Guy Ritchie can keep Madonna and the news can keep it's ignorance. "Assault rifle" in the US is a term most often used to stir up an emotional response to cause trouble.

Well in daily mail they showed that same gun and called it a shotgun. This is why most people have no business talking about guns anymore than they do about medical procedures. They are willfully ignorant.
And strangely, always willfully ignorant in the same direction.

The term used is "assault weapon". It was invented to craft a law banning certain semi-auto rifles, and to confuse the public at large about such rifles.

"assault rifle" is a proper term for a military select-fire rifle such as the M-16.

Rifle, check. Used in an assault, check. Seems appropriately described.

So in your world there is no such thing as an assault rifle or weapon until it has been used in an assault. Congrats, you just took millions of assault weapons off the streets.

Next up we need to do something about assault cars, assault rocks, assault fists.

This is why you will never be taken seriously in a discussion on guns because you bathe in your ignorance on the matter, and it is dripping off you.

Meh. That's just another one of the persecution conspiracies I won't buy. Face it, the media generally sucks at covering anything requiring specialized expertise. Anyone in tech can cite endless examples of the big media butchering tech stories. That doesn't mean they're Luddites. The same goes for science stories. The media consistently fail to get science right. That doesn't mean they're conspiring against science. It just reinforces that they're mostly English majors who are ignorant about science, technology ... and guns. They abuse phrases like "assault weapon" because they hear it a lot and they're trained to try to be interesting and expressive. Using the word "gun" ten times in the same story is boring, so they try to be more creative. It's the same reason sports reporters use 263 different words that all mean "won".

Never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by ignorance.

whaa? /facepalm

You guys were right and i apologize. Clearly if he was shot in the back without warning then no assault could have taken place. Therefore it can't be an assault rifle. I will take more care in future.

The beauty about "assault rifle" is that it is a completely made up term. It can be anything the suburbanite libbies want it to be. So technically CNN isn't incorrect, they are just ahead of their time by a few years.

Its not a completely made up term. The military has been using it for decades, but it only describes a narrow collection of weapons.

The pop-culture use of it sure means anything they want it to. Kind of getting tired of its over use, especially when they cant even stick to their own rules.

In the liberal news it used to mean anything black and scary looking provided it had a pistol grip and a "machine gun clip", (really just a box magazine).

If you are dumb enough to believe its an honest mistake I can see why you might be dumb enough to think its not worth talking about.

I'm smart enough to know people are dumb enough to work in the media while not knowing what an assault rifle is. I think it's a non issue.

He was shot in the back with a .22 cal revolver. That rifle, as far as anyone knows and in all likelihood was never used to shoot anyone, unless that was a .22 cal revolving rifle  Sounds dangerous.

It's actually inner-city liberals. I would gather that suburbanites are less liberal than people living within city limits.

To some degree, yes. However, the media consistently fail to get science right all across the spectra of correct meanings. By contrast, the media consistently fail to get guns right in only one direction - making the guns as scary and as lethal as possible. Calling a bolt-action rimfire rifle a shotgun can be explained by amazing ignorance; calling a bolt-action rimfire rifle an assault rifle cannot, for while the media may also occasionally call a shotgun a rifle, the media will never refer to an assault rifle as anything but an assault rifle.

There actually are revolver rifles, but I seriously doubt street kids own them.
There arent many left and most are in the hands of collectors who will never sell the things off.

The media's use of the term "assault rifle" is partly their lack of understanding as it is in other issues of science and technology, but it is also a premeditated effort to paint a category of guns in a negative light. Do you honestly think Piers Morgan uses the term out of pure ignorance or is it to further his goal of banning many/all guns.

He, and many others that push for banning "assault rifles" claim they're not trying to ban all guns, but if you asked them if we'd be better off if all guns were banned what would they say if they were being honest?

Front page CNN on the story of the shot Australian. There is a video where they show Edwards, a suspect, and he is holding a bolt action rifle with scope. The commentator sais "and here Edwards is seen showing off an assault rifle".

I say WTF to this shit!!! Are they going after bolt actions next? Calling them assault rifles? They can't be that god damn retarded can they? Stupid bitch in video. The clueless fucks who think hunting guns are assault rifles are the people who think they are in a position to ban guns. I seriously am in total shock that she called that an assault rifle. Stunned.

You are in "total shock" that there are idiots in the media?
