Also, I went to CNN and watched the only video I could find with one of the shooting suspects holding a scoped weapon, and the commentator incorrectly calls it a shotgun not an assault rifle when I saw. Can the OP post a link to the video they're talking about?

I pointed out that in a video I found they were calling what I think is the same gun the OP is referring to a shotgun. It seems they honestly are just having clueless people talk about this.

Here in California, we have politicians that want to define 10/22 rifles as assault weapons that need to be registered for our safety. Two generations ago, 10/22 rifles were used on Main Street in Disneyland for kids to use in the shooting gallery.

It was made up so people would associate a regular semi-automatic rifle like a bolt action rifle with the false term "assault weapon". Which then leads people to associating anything called a "assault weapon" with assault rifles which is a real term for fully automatic weapons that require a class 3 FFL from the ATF to own.
