Woah!

That's one long tunnel!

No silly. He's talking about the tunnel from BC to Washington State. It was used to smuggle fresh pot from BC to the US.

At my work it's really funny. There's a sign on the coffee maker that reads "if you're the first one to make coffee in the morning, use fresh pot", then the stir sticks are made by a company called "Stone". :Q

Can they risk the pissed off redneck vote either? Let's face it, the conservatives and the Republicans in this country have been betrayed by Bush on (at least) two key issues: border control/illegal immigration and fiscally-responsible spending in Congress.

the republicans are leading the charge on fiscally irresponsible spending in congress

when you tighten the border people who get here tend to stay here. and people will get here regardless of how tight you make the border.

Think about it for a second, it's completely within the Adminsitration and Congress's power to finally do something about the immigration/border security issue -- I mean they do control the White House and Congress do they not? And soon, majority ideological support in the judiciary. If Bush can't fix this, then who the F can?

He can't do anything when the Democrats obstruct everything he puts on the table. Let's face it, Dems can't risk losing Hispanic votes. They've been losing a pretty decent portion to Republicans over the last few elections and any serious action against the problem would completely decimate their "base".

Exactly what has he put on the table? And are you forgetting that the Republicans have the majority in Congress? You don't think they could get something passed if they put their minds to it? Pfffft, my comments stand -- you're satisfied with Bush doing nothing. If that isn't setting the bar low, I don't know what is.

Don't lay this on him my ass. I can't believe how low you set the bar sometimes, Pabster.

Thanks for your typical liberal diatribe -- you're doing a fine job towing the party line
It's a "liberal diatribe" to expect a two-term President with control of Congress to do something meaningful regarding a major issue like immigration and border security?! Dude, are you high?

Well isnt this nice.

This is one issue I will blast Bush on until the cows come home. Dont cry about guest worker visa's. Put the damn military on the border and keep these people out. One day 9-11 will happen again but worse due to this border situation.

Why's that? If open trade is good them open borders are even better for the consumer and business.

No they arent, where did you get that idea?

I don;t see what's so hard to understand.

Open borders would be a boone to home builders - restaurants - hotels or any other business requiring low skilled labor. There would be a virtual limitless supply of minimum wage workers who stay at minimum wage thus reducing costs to the consumer for the goods and services these workers produce.

Again I really don't understand why the republican rank and file is'nt all over this open borders idea since it mirrors free trade to a tee which they seem to advocate. Instead of shiping jobs out we ship the workers in. As a bonus we get reduced costs of labor and corresponding goods and services of things we can't outsource like farming, construction, hospitality, dining etc.

If anything it's more economically sound because instead of say China getting a cut for the goods they produce for us it would all stay here (assuming minimum wage was eliminted too) I could actually get behind open borders a lot more than free trade with the red who hate our guts.

I say let em have their tunnel, as long as it branches out to to all the farms and orchards where people want to work. It just needs to be moderated, ie., no drugs, no smuggling, robbing, murder, etc. ;)

Don't forget the Tacoreas.. loves me some asada burros.

Only real problem I have is one of screening - could be xfelons - and those trying to escape justice in mex - we never know. Well we do and LA's illegal crime rate is higher than legals. Once that gets in place I have no problem with totally open borders. I thnk it would be a massive shot in the arm to our fledging economy.

There is a lot to this argument. Of course some people would lose out (low wage american workers) somewhat and even more people will be more than reasonably scared, as is usually the case in trade issues.
