They later claim to have thought it was a hoax bomb, which says something about what they believe about the intelligence of their peers.

It doesn't say much when biting a chicken nugget into the shape of a pistol is grounds for suspension.

Rather serious reactions are discretionary matters. If he didn't insinuate it was a bomb and nobody actually thought it was a bomb, other events had to have occurred simultaneous to result in what it did. One, they had to have something against the kid, and two, they had to know the details of bomb/terror law to then get him on some kind of technicality. This is typical authoritarians making an example of someone they find unfavorable. Whether that's in whole or part because he plays the role of a terrorism in their mind is uncertain, but they knew the optics of the situation going in.

In case you weren't aware, a valedictorian is simply given for a certain grade average. Given how obvious it was the clock wasn't a bomb and even the school authorities still can't tell it's not surprising the other muslim kid at school (who ostensibly can determine trivial facts) was top of their class.

A Boeing building with 1000 engineers in it was evacuated in OKC a couple of weeks ago, because a box sitting outside of a lab had yellow powder on it and someone thought it might be a chemical attack. Point being, people are stupid when it comes to bombs, or what might be bombs, it doesn't have to be racially motivated.

When this story first came out I was on the kid's side, but the more that came out the more I started to realize he was trolling. And when you are trolling you can't be pissed when someone takes the bait.

I'm pretty lenient in the way I think about a lot of things, but at this point they ought to boot the case out of court and tell him to get on with his life.

Won't even comment on some of the other things posted.
This, exactly.

This was exactly my process.

Listen to the suffering as explained by Ahmed:

“I lost a lot of things in my life,” Ahmed recently told The Washington Post. “The number one thing people think about me is that I’m living ‘the life’ . . . But I can’t build anymore. My dad doesn’t have a job anymore. I moved from my house to an apartment. I lost my place for building things. Over [in Qatar] it’s very boring, I can’t do anything. The only thing I can do is use the Internet.”

Kind of odd that. He is suffering from ennui. No PTSD, no emotional scars, no nightmares.... just boredom from living in a country that outlaws nearly everything that makes life worth living. That is worth $15 million dollars? If so, perhaps he should sue Qatar instead of his old school.

Trump will take care of this little punk. Quickly.

Well, Trump has been attacking the 1st amendment his entire campaign, and he wouldn't want to leave out the petition clause.

What was it that made you think he was trolling?

Supposedly his engineering teacher told him to put it away because dummies might take it the wrong way, and he set the alarm to go off in english class anyway. Some take this as evidence of trolling, even though the police eventually cleared him of any such wrong.

This was exactly my process.

They're not going to get $15mil. It's SOP to sue for whatever ridiculous figure, and negotiate some much lesser amount for settlement. People upset about that can take it up with the us legal system.

The fact that the family moved away to Qatar to live on the dole there, and then "Opps, now we have no money! Oh,I know! Let's sue back in Texas!" is telling that the parents have extremely poor judgement.

The kid should be forgiven for having poor judgement- he's a kid. The parents however sound like real dyed in the wool morons. Easy guess where the kid gets his poor judgement from.

I don't believe idiocy has a thing to do with this. I believe his father to be intelligent. I believe there was a purpose for all of this. I think the father wanted fame and the father wanted fortune. He has his fame, it remains to be seen if he gains the fortune.

I'm just waiting for the school to use the "it's not discrimination, just a discrimination hoax" defense.

I also hope they toss the case in the waste bin where it belongs.

I trolled everyone and had to move to a dump of a country and now I'm bored. Poor me!

Using one's own children to get 'fame' (in a highly stupid way) I don't see as a very good demonstration of intelligence.

I think there's several stupid things that happened- first off, I doubt the family or the kid thought anyone would react to a stupid clock the way they did. The reaction is pretty stupid. But setting the thing to alarm in a class, knowing people are sensitive these days about school attacks (and not without reason) that was a dumb thing to do, but 14 year olds do dumb things. So what?

The school reaction should have just been take that home, don't do it again. End of story. Should have never gone past the walls of the school.

But the whole moving to another country thing, pretending to be victimized (I don't buy any of that, the family makes stupid choices and moving to some place they can't support themselves over something so stupid was clearly one of them) and then coming up with this bullshit to sue over... it's all just stupid. If they plan had been to sue all along, they'd have done so right away while still in the states.

Well, that's weird. Did he not point out that he's secretly the king of Siam or Narnia or whatever? Did he fail to emphasize how his daughter being suspended for making a bomb threat shows it's a conspiracy? Did he not play the race card?

Frankly I blame the grandfather. Naming your child Mohammed Mohammed virtually guarantees he'll be a dick. There's a reason why Americans named Mr. and Mrs. Thomas don't name their sons Thomas.

It's been reported by WaPo and other media outlets, though this article was just after they had dismissed the first 4 defendants. They hadn't dismissed the last two yet:

Good to see that the system worked, and that the filer of the frivolous suits now owes the defendants a lot of money. That helps discourage similar frivolous suits in the future.

Its custom to name your first born son mohammed. They will then normally use their middle name in everyday life. You should know stuff like this.

But if the Thomas's named their sons John, they would be guaranteed to be dicks. ...and I don't mean virtually!

When the custom is stupid, only stupid people follow the custom.

lol Yeah, but then when he picked up his son at school, he could say "My, what a big John Thomas I have!" and get away with it.
