NYPost reporting that the Yankees are close to landing Cliff Lee for top catching prospect Jesus Montero.

I've been a Yankee fan since I was conceived. I was a Yankee fan in the '80s when they sucked and fought it out for 5th in the division every year. I'm not a front-running, bandwagoning fan. I remember Tim Leary, Lance McCullers, Steve Trout, etc. I realize that this is not a free-agent acquisition and that the Yankees are not outbidding everyone else for him, they are actually giving up a top prospect they developed for years to get him. That being said, I hate this move. Enough is enough. Do we have to field an all-star at every position and every spot in the rotation? Yeah, I realize under the current rules there is no reason not to, but it's sucking the life and joy out of baseball as far as I'm concerned. And what's the plan after Posada is gone? It won't be long now before he can't catch at all. Francisco Cervelli is exceeding everyone's expectations, but can he really be expected to keep playing at this level after he's never done it before in the minors? What then, will the Yankees sign Joe Mauer? I can't take it anymore.

Alvaro Espanoza, Don Slaught, Jesse Barfield :D

Seriously though, I finally got turned off when they signed Jason Giambi. Part of the fun was wathcing the epic showdowns between the A's and the Yankees every year in the playoffs, that just ruined it.

I still watch the games and root for them, but I don't have any kind of passion for it like I used to.

Espy! lol, they sucked so bad. I still root for them too, and always will. I still go to the stadium. But they are sucking the joy out of it.

Not his fault. He's being traded around. Indians traded him to Philly, Phils traded him to Seattle, Seattle is going to trade him to NY.

his fault for outright refusing to sign a contract w/ any team he's been with. the phils did a decent job trying to retain him, but in the end he still wanted to test free agency. i thought we gave up too much in that trade to seattle

He wants a payday. And I think he's earned one. Oh, and Boras is his agent.

At least Yankees fans are starting to admit this.

It isn't fun for other teams. Sport is supposed to be about competition and excitement. The Yankees are assisting baseball in having neither.

This. If the fans start to admit this and the team realizes it's actually alienating true baseball lovers something might change. Even then probably not.

I don't understand how any Yankees fan can be excited about this or watching this team though.

Part of sport is the unknown, the competition...coming down to the wire.

The only unknown for the Yankees is whether they'll sign Albert Pujols and Evan Longoria next year and have them backup their current starters for days they need off.

They might as well sign all the best pitchers in the league and have them each pitch one inning.

Absolutely. That's why everyone outside of NY hates the Yankees.

suck what? really, they don't suck. what you meant to say is I don't like them. maybe you've extended that to hating them, but they don't suck.

Wrong, they do suck. With the roster they buy, they SHOULD win it every year and they haven't come close. They've won 1 world series in the last 9 years. Thats as many as the Angels, Cardinals, Marlins, White Sox, Phillies and Diamondbacks. They have almost twice the payroll of most of these teams.

Yankees suck.....period. They're probably one of the worst teams in baseball in terms of wins to payroll.

Yeah, but payroll does not guarantee wins. It's still a game that has to be played. sure, payroll makes it easier to win, but it does not guarantee it. The Yankees have a huge payroll, great players, and still dont always win. The Mets are an even better example. They have a huge payroll and haven't won jack. Does it mean they suck? Maybe, but I think it means that it's still a game.

why would they sign pujols when they already have tex under long term contract?
and don't say DH because both are great defensive 1st basemen.

Same for longoria/arod.

Would have been more fun if it was the Mets getting him.

Since the Mariners aren't interested in winning any more, the only time I ever watch the MLB is at the end of summer to root against the Yankees, and laugh when they lose.

Fuck the Yankees.

Quite true, and I'm sure theres something to be said about pressure on players playing in NY. Aside from that though, when you have the best roster from top to bottom and have only won once in the last 9-10 years, thats pretty sad.

I respected them more in the 90s when many of their players were homegrown. Theres no glory in trying to buy championships. I would feel the same as you did if my team did that and it would take away from the idea of working for it.

Lebron can win 10 rings in Miami, but he'll be remembered as the guy who couldn't win it without Wade/Bosh. The Celtics basically bought their championship too from a couple years ago. I respect them for winning, but they won't be remembered as great.

Having said all that, it is a business and they can all do what they want.

True. Another point is that Boston was pursuing every big free agent that Yanks signed. Should they let Boston get them instead for the glory of it all? And the 'core four' are still playing in NY.

So why hate the Yankees? Hate their obnoxious bandwagon fans. I know I do.

Hate is a strong term for a baseball team, I meant to say people root against the Yankees and those other teams because the more those teams start sucking again, the more bandwagon fans can fall off and disappear again. Thats something we can all be happy about.
