I'm not sure what the problem is. They are giving up arguably the #1 prospect in all of baseball for a half season rental of Cliff Lee. There is no guarantee he'll even resign with the Yanks. This is a win-win for both teams.

As far as the Yankee haters, that's not what this thread is about. Haters gonna hate ;)

The problem is that the Yankees are going to have an all-star at every position and every spot in the rotation and it's freaking ridiculous already.

philly gets such a bad rap for their fans, but from my experience, yankees fans are pretty low class as well.

Baseball fans are tame compared to football fans. I despise the Eagles and their fans. I don't remember seeing a courtroom inthe Giants stadium basement like they had at the vet.

Why is everyone so mad that the yankees spend money to win while pretty much every other team puts it right into the bank?

I'm pretty sure the Yankees are putting money in the bank too.

Of course, but many of the small market teams that cry poverty take the revenue sharing and luxury tax money and just stash it. The point of those things is to make the small market teams competitive by getting the funds to them which are necessary to sign free agents.

F the Yankees. I would call them cheaters but unfortunately baseball allows this crap. Maybe one day baseball will be more like football but I'm sure Yankees fans would hate that.

Oh well, it makes it that much more enjoyable when they lose and since I can't respect their WS victories it's a win/win for me.

Real Yankees fans would not hate that at all.

In my experience Yankee fans are still better than Red Sox fans. I won't go to the ballpark when the Red Sox are in town because of the lowlives that show up.

This is horrible for the sport. Get a cap, get some parity, and maybe you'll get some ratings in the playoffs.

A good reason why I don't pay attention to the standings but still check stats for my favorite players (triple crown contenders Hamilton/Vlad/Cabrera/Morneau, Ichiro, Lincecum, Halladay, Lester, Straburg, Victorino, Howard, Utley, Mauer, Pujols). I don't really root for teams but more for players nowadays (although I'll always root for Phillies vs Mets!).

As one of my favorite sports it's sad to say but I couldn't care less about who wins what division because the best players all go to the highest payroll teams (both NY Teams, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, both LA teams, Philly). Essentially a handful of super-mega Allstars that win it all every year. Occasionally the little guy will win like Tampa Bay or this year's Reds/Padres, but it won't last til the end of the season.

Playoff baseball is leaps and bounds behind the NHL, NFL, and even NBA because of a lack of monetary parity (i.e. a cap). Who wins in baseball is simply irrelevant, it's been proven XYZ times in the past decade that payroll = almost guaranteed playoff spot unless you have sh!t management or injuries (see the Mets). Greed is a helluva drug and winning in baseball has been rendered moot by the teams who buy their way to the playoffs such as the Yankees, Mets, or Red Sox.

I remember going to a Yankees-Red Sox game at the old Yankees Stadium and some Yankee fans from the first inning heckling a group of Red Sox fans. By the 7th, the Yankee fans got drunk enough to have the courage to go over to the Red Sox fans started a fight. Took a good couple of minutes before security came over to break it up.

Well, I only know what I've seen at Angel Stadium and I the Yankee fans are nowhere nearly as rowdy as the Red Sox fans.

That said, it probably also helps that most Angel fans are pretty low-key and non-confrontational.

I find it hilarious that Yankees fans response to backlash like this is:

"Haters gotta hate"

What are you 12 years old?

Baseball is becoming more and more irrelevant as times goes on.

If the NBA didn't have a salary cap and the Lakers starting 5 was:

Deron Williams
Kobe Bryant
LeBron James
Dirk Nowitzki
Dwight Howard

Would anyone watch? What is the point? There are fans in lots of other baseball cities too. We like baseball too. Shocking I know that there are human beings that exist outside of glamorous amazing New York City. Once you close minded assholes realize that the Yankees are destroying the competitive balance in baseball and ruining it for millions of people who enjoy (or used to) watching the sport, maybe you'll see a change is needed.

Do you get excited if you and 4 other adults played pick up basketball against 7 year olds and laughed in everyone else's face as you destroyed them? No of course you wouldn't, because you'd look like an asshole. That's how Yankees fans look. Nobody cares that you massively overpay and destroy the sport for everyone else. Enjoy playing with each other because nobody respects you.

??

Looks to me like most of the Yankee fans in this thread are advocating change.

All-stars in baseball don't seem to have as big of an effect because they're only up to the plate infrequently, and good players only have success about 1/3 of the time. So there are huge random factors involved, which dilute the chances of a stacked superstar team anyway.

Over the last few years, Yankees haven't been doing that well, with Florida even stealing the rings a couple of times.

The NBA isn't really that great of a comparison. Even with their soft cap, the Lakers and Celtics have over half the rings in the last 40 years or whatever it is. In any given year, really only 4 or 5 teams have a good chance at winning a title anyway. In baseball, tons of different teams have won a ring in the past few years.

The ratings aren't that great for baseball, but I think that's more of a function that baseball isn't really that action-packed most of the time compared to the other sports, where stuff is happening at a faster pace. I think soccer has huge ratings in Europe, and over there, it's as capitalistic as it gets. You buy and sell players on the open market and there are no caps. You have huge 4 teams in the EPL (Liverpool, Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal) that win every year, yet it's hugely popular. Real Madrid is 10x more Yankees than the Yankees ever will be.

By the way, it would be hilarious if Yanks get Lee today and he just switches sides since he's starting today against the Yanks. I know it won't happen but it's an amusing thought.

30 teams in the MLB, in the past 30 years, 19 have won championships. Sure certain teams make the playoffs year after year, but championship parity isn't that terrible.
