It was to defend the Nation, because there was no Military. It wasn't because it was Cool to own a gun.
Wrong it was there to guarantee the people the ability to overthrow their own government should that become necessary. Militias were strictly an armed force belonging to each individual state. The federal government had no authority to call up state militias. Back then the federal government did not have the right to nationalize militias as it does today with the national guard in each state. This was expressly to limit the power of the federal government with armed force of necessary.
