It was to defend the Nation, because there was no Military. It wasn't because it was Cool to own a gun.

Wrong it was there to guarantee the people the ability to overthrow their own government should that become necessary. Militias were strictly an armed force belonging to each individual state. The federal government had no authority to call up state militias. Back then the federal government did not have the right to nationalize militias as it does today with the national guard in each state. This was expressly to limit the power of the federal government with armed force of necessary.

I'm from St. Louis, but grew up in a nicer suburb. But I'm well aware of how bad the inner city is (murder capital of the US), and if I was a young black man growing up here, I'd want a damn gun on me just going outside to get the mail.

LOL, a home run to where, Failville? What do you think would have happened had "tarp man" and his other hundred friends turned on the FBI? It'd have been an FBI slaughter. No one yokel is going to overthrow the Gov, but many many yokels easily could. Of course, they're not going to do it disarmed. We'll ignore what the local people would think of that action or that any of the wounded nut cases would die, they get the Sheriff & agents in the area here's what happens next the FBI and National Guard show up with Armored cars surround the area, turn off the power and water, blast death metal tunes at them 24 hours a day and maybe use some tear gas. What happens then?

If we are thinking that there will be a Government overthrow of the Constitution and Obama wants to become king (this is just pretend) The Army shows up with tanks and a few 1000 lbs bombs

The FBI rounds up all their family members and jails them until those idiots get out

If all rules are off they could start mixing that gas that makes people poop their pants nearly instantly once inhaled. Use that for a few days just for the laughs

Thank God the citizens of West Virginia can now rest just a bit more comfortable in the knowledge that their untrained neighbors will be packing heat without jumping through any of those frustrating bureaucratic hoops. After all, more guns = more safety; and that's a fact.

Sure, with a small contingent, especially rural where the powers that be don't have to worry about 3rd party damage, that's going to happen. When it's 30-50% of people in multiple towns rebelling, that's not going to happen. The Army isn't going to start shooting into civilian areas - they will refuse, whether officially or individually.

The point of 2A isn't so some rural freak can whack off to his firearm collection, the point of 2A is to a.) ensure if we ever had an adversary come to the US, that the citizenship would be sufficiently armed to offer a resistance (pointless in this day and age) and b.) that if the Gov ever got too oppressive, the citizenship would have the means to overthrow them. I'm not willing to cede the capability of B because of animals killing each other over city territory, druggies, and the crazy here and there running around. Deal with them and stop infringing on my rights and our one real check as a citizenry.

If half of the US took up arms against the military and FBI, the people would win. You surely don't think the FBI and military can control 160 million armed people, do you? There is a limit to our military/police/agencies. They had to bring in the national guard for 1000 teens in baltimore, what do you think happens with 160 million?
