classical violin music CD recommendations

Anybody have any recommendations for a good (or a couple of good) CD's of classical music, primarily violin? Every once in awhile I get in a mood for classical, but I don't necessarily want to just buy a bunch of stuff from one composer, and I'm not looking to become a classical expert, and there's SO many options it's overwhelming for a casual listener.

Basically I want just strong, "power" stuff. I'm not sure the best way to describe it, but I can always download samples to see if a particular piece is the type I want. I don't mind some slow, depressing sorts of songs, but mostly I want the type of stuff that lifts one up to hear it (the sort where the conductor gets sweaty during the concert and has buttons popping off his clothes he's moving so fast and hard 🙂). Right now I'm listening to Kanon D-Dur (Quartet) by Pachelbel (from the Neon Genesis Evangelion soundtrack) and it's very much the type that I'm looking for, but I'd also like a nice selection of different things. It doesn't have to be ALL violin, but string instruments would be nice as the focus.

I think violin is the most wonderful sounding instrument ever. 🙂

Mendelssohn's Concerto in E minor (all three movements). It encompasses a great range of the violin's capabilities, from "power" to more gentle (but just as expressive) moments.

Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto #1 is my personal favorite. When I was in High School, our orchestra played it, so I guess I'm biased.

Vanessa Mae has done some good stuff, with an electric violin. I don't generally like "normal" classical music, but the electric violin adds something special to the music.

Oh yeah, the soundtrack to the Red Violin by John Corgliano is wonderful, modern classical stuff. It won an Oscar for best score about two years ago.

I second Vanessa Mae. She also has some good regular violin as well as electric. And if you get tired of the music, you can look at photo on the CD!

Also, here's a strange suggestion -- you might try some bluegrass fiddle. It's kinda uplifiting, and can move very, very fast.

A question to the rest of you: Does anybody know the name of the group of 4-5 women (might be sisters?) that play kinda new-age violin from somewhere in Europe (maybe England). I got a chance to hear a snippet of their music, but I don't remember the name.

second that, it gets no respect from elitists but it's popular for good reason. Energetic and very accessible.

For performers, Anne-Sophie Mutter is one of the best and she has several collections, boxed sets and recital CDs.

This isn't classical violin music exactly, it would be classified more as classical jazz. Try to locate some of Stephani Grapelli's works. He's pretty good for an old guy. 😉
