My work in Austin was cancelled today and will be tomorrow b/c of the ice. Better safe than sorry and no reason to put people in danger I guess. I lost power this morning for a few hours too.

Snow tires, plough/salt trucks in Canada FTW. We just had a big dump of snow (maybe 5-6 inches) last night into this morning and nobody blinked. It's going down to about 3 deg F (-16 deg C) tonight, and I suspect some of today's lovely snow will be nice and icy tomorrow.

I'm in houston, people are talking about the sleet we are supposed to see tonight like it's the god damn apocalypse.

I mean, hell, in saint louis it would hardly even register, but apparently if anything frozen falls out of the sky in houston the whole damn place closes down.

I thought Texans were supposed to be tough.

All that aside, it would be nice not to have to go to my 8am tommorow.

It's all about being prepared.

Up north they have salt/sand trucks and snow plows. They have snow tires which help them get a good grip. They KNOW how to drive in those conditions.

Down south, there is no preparation and people can't handle the driving conditions. Houston traffic + snow = a lot of people dying

I goto St. Edward's in Austin, and my classes aren't canceled. WTF.

The whole city is going to shut down except for my school.

If you couple your equations with the overweight passenger driving the car you get an atomic bomb worth of force on impact

and people we do not have the infrastructure for this in houston or anything south of dallas. People in Houston put on f-ing parkas when it gets below 70-at least in the ghetto.

I go to Arlington and we aren't having any classes canceled. There is a thin sheet of ice on my car.

Almost forgot, they did close the library.

I live in NH. No chance of my classes being canceled tomorrow even though we are covered in ice as well.

Wow. Its cold enough for ice in Texas? I live in PA, and we have had two snow storms where the snow actually stayed on the ground, but it only lasted for two days total. Lately, the whether has been fluctuating like crazy. Today was ~45F. The rest of the week is supposed to be ~25-30F. Last week it reached upper 50s, low 60s.

I want a snow/ice day. :(

Learn to drive - you don't need to slam the brakes every time you stop. You don't need to floor it every time you start. Drive more slowly when it's snowing or especially when it got really cold overnight after a rain.

Texas State in San Marcos isn't having classes tomorrow and the outlet mall shut down early today (6pm) and probably won't be open at all tomorrow.

For those laughing about us staying in over a little bit of ice, the reason is everybody else. I know I can take it slow and easy and get where I need to go

Parts of I-35 in Austin were closed in Austin this evening http://www.statesman.com/ for more info

Austin police closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 North from U.S. 290 East to 51st Street due to a collision about 9 p.m. Monday. They also closed the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 South in the Ben White area at about 9:30 p.m. due to icy conditions and multiple collisions.

There were 182 collisions in Austin between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. Monday, said David Matustik, a spokesman for the Austin/Travis County Office of Emergency Management.

They shouldn't be laughing at the south. But surely you know, everyone here is a perfect driver while everyone else sucks big time. ;)

Even in Illinois, during the big storms early December, I-80 was shut down through nearly the whole stretch of Illinois, as so many cars were in the ditch.

I've never been in an accident, or in the ditch due to bad weather, but I've certainly had my share of close calls, things I'd never want to relive ever. Only difference between here and the south is that we rarely if ever get days off due to weather, just have to make do.

This is extending my vacation at least one more day, and it's starting to look like it may be two. :D

Austin is full of idiots who don't know how to drive on ice, and the limited amount of sand trucks (no salt, btw) can't keep up with the sheer amount of roads in the area.

I'm happy to curl up by the fire for a day or two instead of risking it out on the road.

Here are a few pics from my drive to Austin. There must have been a flipped over truck every few miles for most of the 400 mile trip.

I certainly hope that you accidentally posted the wrong pic, because there's almost no ice on that road! We have more ice here in Seattle, and we don't get ice! Plus, we have hills too...

yeah, I'm from maine. we had probably the worse in history back in '98.

http://canadaonline.about.com/cs/weather/p/icestorm.htm

that's that. southerners freak out when they have to drive in the rain. I can't imagine this. lol. I don't mean to laugh because I heard like 30 people have died from these storms so far.

we lost pwer and had to get water from some huge truck in another town's town hall.

ummm... no, that's southern californians.

rain is no problem in houston. we get more of it than seattle.

and, after closing all the schools, many overpasses, and spreading gravel on all the other overpasses, it didn't freeze or rain overnight. yay overhyped media-induced panic.

There was enough ice that if my dad pushed the car over 20mph, he couldn't maintain control of the car. He lived in New York most of his life and knows how to drive in the winter time, so the roads must have been slightly bad.
