<< What happens to fuel economy when VTEC is used? >>

Fuel economy? Hmm, I hear a toilet flushing off in the distance :) VTEC changes to a much more agressive profile (with its cams), thus (I assume) burning lots of fuel.

<< The z28 Camaro has OWNED the Mustang GT and/or Cobra in any speed test stock for stock since at least 1993 for sure, since the LT1 was introduced in the fbody, and for DAMN SURE since 98 when the LS1 really opened a can up. And most likely before 93 too >>

Um no. The Cobra had the 305 hp 4.6 long before the Z got the LS1. Even the 240 hp 93 Cobra, regarded as the best Mustang since the 70's, with 45 less hp than the LT1 powered Z's equaled, if not beat the LT1 powered Z's.

Oh btw, if you want to compare "owning" Mustang GT and/or Cobras to Z28's, the Z in no way, shape, form or fashion can outhandle the Mustang Cobra. (Hmm....live axle Z outhandling an IRS Cobra....right....)

RagingBITCH, ummm, sorry. I ran a '97 Cobra last sat. night. he had 4.10's, nitto street slicks, granatelli maf and intake system, and PCM programming. Sorry to say, I walked close to 2 cars on him. I have a '98 Z28, M6, stock. If there are any doubts, I can link this thread to corral.net for him to verify it, if need be. The Cobra's are nice cars, no doubting that. They are super quick to 80mph, then from then on the LS1 pulls on it hard. Maybe a blower on a stock cobra would even it up.

<<VTEC is a joke...>>

What a silly article. VTEC does exactly what it was designed to do. You get good gas mileage when you want it, and you get a special surprise when you want it;). For people such as myself who keep the Prelude Si in the 4-6k range every single time I accelerate, VTEC is cool:).

And isn't this forum in love with the S2000? In order to get all 240 horses you have to rev that baby up to near 9,000rpm. VTEC, power when you want it.

<< VTEC, power when you want it. >>

Pseudo-power (240 ain't nuffin) when you want it, but you have to kill the engine to do it, and if you aren't already in the high rpm band, you're fu*ked.

American V8/V10 - power whenever the hell you want it.. leavin' the putting-along Vtec at the line while it strains up to 6k rpm so it can get into the vtec

That's the thing, it's not really killing the engine. The engines are designed to rev that high... I think the S2000 pulls 0-60mph in 5.0, just a tad shy of the Vette.

You are correct. Somewhere I heard 5.0s, it must have been a bad source. An internet search shows no agreement with times ranging from 5.2-5.8s

cablegod - thought you had a supercharged SS?

And the 4.6 Cobras can't keep up with the LS1's - I never said they couldn't. And for those amt of mods that's more of a $hitty driver with $hitty driving skills rather than the car. (If you would like, I can link to pages with Ford Lightnings chewing up LS1 powered WS6s and Corvettes even though the WS6 and Corvette should both own the Lightning up and down the block.)

Well I agree that VTEC was designed exactly the way it was supposed to work... VTEC is for people who rev high, and want to go fast at high rpms... Seems like a good deal if you ask me, its free power when you want it. :)

Cablegod, as he has said numerous times, had his SS totaled when an idiot hit it parked on the side of the road. He then bought a white 98 Z28.

Are you saying stock Lightnings are chewing up stock LS1's? It would take a few bolt-ons to make up the difference. Lightnings are cool for what they are, fast trucks, but stock for stock, it can't keep up with a sports car like a Corvette. Or perhaps the drivers didn't realize that you aren't supposed to start off the line in 3rd gear.. :Q :p

If that is what Vtec is all about, you can HAVE it, I want no part of it. You have a little 90-hp slug off the line, and the entire time you drive it until you rev it past 6k or whatever rpm's, then the "power" kicks in? Ugh... the car you're racing will have 5 cars on you before you "hit the vtec". Thanks, but no thanks.

Hey Valhalla, those new lightnings are super quick man. Stpck vs. stock it will keep up with a LS1 Camaro with the "standard" mods.

Oh, and all the people who say VTEC is pointless is grossly uninformed. I looked at that site, and I think he's on a crusade against benefiting any type of 4 cyl engine. VTEC is just a little kick in the ass for a Honda engine. Turbo is the same thing and doesn't kick in until a certain RPM is hit, do people call turbos pointless? No, so why is VTEC any different?

It's just that people are afraid to look at the facts, and always has a biased view - wtf is wrong with these people? (referring to that moron who made that site)

its like making a site and saying....did you know your computer makes heat and you have to have a fan and heatsink to make up for it, and it will consume more electricity.

**nerdy laugh**

edit: typos are killing me
