I read a while back that you cant have a cape.
No Capes = CRAP!
no capes does suck but i like the fact that they decided not to add them b/c they couldn't do it right
I'd rather have no capes than capes all messed up
I concur. I hear they're trying to add them, though, along with some other improvements to the costume system (which is already insanely detailed).
i've play this game for about a week now and it's gettin better and better.. my first MMORPG but its turning out to be worth the 15 bucks a month so far.
Holy crap, this is the best MMORPG I've ever played by FAR. It's like they took EverQuest, ditched the fantasy theme, got rid of all the boring camping and hunting for drops and crafting, added the random mission system from Anarchy Online, gave it graphics better than Asheron's Call 2, invented a MUCH improved partying system, and then
actually playtested the classes and balanced them. There have been a few combat system tweaks over the last few weeks (most notably, they made it a LOT harder to fight enemies more than a few levels above you), but I haven't heard many complaints.
I do agree that having to pay $40 and THEN $15 a month sucks. At the very least, give me 2 or 3 months for my initial investment, or sell the game for around the price of a 1-month subscription.
Oh, and someone was asking about soloing. It's not too hard (at least for the first 15 levels or so) if you play one of the melee archetypes (Scrapper or Tanker), and Blasters and Controllers can do alright if you choose the right power sets (having a way to stun/immobilize/knockdown enemies is vital, because your defense is lousy and you don't have a ton of HP). I wouldn't try it as a Defender -- although if you're a Defender, you'll probably be snatched up instantly if you put yourself on the "looking for a team" list. I'm not sure how difficult it will be as I continue levelling up, but I can imagine it gets a lot harder. Basically, as you advance the enemies get more specialized -- and certain enemy types will give certain power sets a lot of trouble. For instance, I'm a Tanker, but my character right now has very little defense against Energy and Negative Energy attacks (so enemies who hit with those hurt me a *lot*), and all my attacks are physical (so if I go up against enemies who are strong against physical attacks but weak against, say, Fire or Cold, I can't do much damage). Grouping greatly mitigates these effects -- either someone will have the right kind of attack/defense, or if they're a Controller or Defender, they'll be able to cripple/stun the enemies and/or patch up your weaknesses.
I also saw these comments:
All of the scenery was monotonous, it was all urban areas. Some of the quests took you to sewers.... woopdiefreakindoo... you're not in the city, you're in the sh!!ty parts of a city.
You definitely didn't get around much. Yes, it's all 'urban' areas, but they're really varied. There are parks and lakes in some zones (such as Perez Park), and the city itself ranges from the 'downtown' (Steel Canyon, Skyway City), to more rundown slums (Kings Row), to the waterfront and port (Independence Port, Talos Island), and then some really devastated areas that are just rubble and ruins ("Boomtown") -- and I haven't even gotten to the high-level 'trial' zones yet! They're also supposed to be adding several new zones and enemy types when the first major update happens (which should be in a few weeks).
The indoor missions do get a bit repetitive. There's about half a dozen 'kinds' of indoor missions, such as sewers, office buildings, caves, warehouses, etc. -- but only 4 or 5 unique maps for each one (that is, the maps are NOT randomly generated as in AO). However, they're all much more detailed than any randomly generated maps I've seen.
Not to mention the differences between choosing the different methods of how you gained your powers (mutant, science, etc) seemed to have absolutely zero impact on the actual outcome of your character.
You are correct. The only thing your "Origin" does is affect which costume parts you can use (for example, "Science" and "Technology" characters can use robot/cyborg parts, and "Magic" characters can get robes and things like that), and which Enhancements you can use at the higher levels (although there are equivalent enhancements for every origin; only the names are different).
The result being that in actuality there were only around 4 or 5 different classes to choose from.
There are five different 'Archetypes' (roughly corresponding to 'classes' in other MMORPGs): Blaster (powerful ranged attacks), Controller (stuns/debuffs), Defender (buffs/healing), Scrapper (excellent melee, good defense), and Tanker (excellent defense, good melee). Each of those chooses a Primary and Secondary power set (and there are 4-5 choices for each within each Archetype, although a few are duplicated), which defines which powers you will earn as you progress. So there are around 100 basic character templates to choose from. You can also choose additional 'Pool' powers (available to all characters) as you advance. These include the movement powers (flight, super jumping, super speed, and teleportation), as well as numerous other assorted abilities like first aid, leadership, and stealth. So, while I guess there are only 5 'kinds' of characters, it's not like most MMORPGs where everyone in the same 'class' has exactly the same spells/abilities and the only difference is how good your items are.
