Cities XL Demo

hopefully it won't disappoint, but i read some into it when the beta was released.

didn't sound like what i was expecting.

regardless, i've been waiting to try this out for well over a year now.

I've heard mixed things about the game and the company. Will be interested to see how this thing is currently at.

Should be very similar from I understand.

What bothers me, is now that the Demo is available, it seems they've dumped their Forums (and registered users).
Now you can't find out what people are thinking about the game . . . good or bad 🙁

I played in the beta and it is very simcity like. The online portion allows you to trade resources with neighboring cities, host events in parks, eventually moving towards having your own small governments that connect to others. So you can buy power from someone or sell food to someone.
The main site is down because this isn't the official demo release until a few more days so I expect they are preparing the site.

Do you feel like the online component is fleshed out enough to warrant a lot of time, or does it feel tacked on?

Haven't played it in quite a while, but when I did it was very difficult to grow a city.

The online component has been there from the start and I feel that is the main focus of the game. It has solo play, but online is where I think it is it the most fun.

It felt tacked on to me. There was never any real need to actually interact with other players.

As soon as NDA is lifted, I can give a synopsis of the beta and my impressions.

So there's an open demo, but still an NDA? How does that work?

MC has explicitly said that people may openly discuss the content of the demo but beta testers are not allowed to share their opinions of the beta and its content.
Take that for what you will.

Edit: Since I'm limited to talking about things that are public knowledge, and this happened to pop up on a public forum

You only get buses and roads. Everything else costs extra.

Awwww shit. This game couldve been fun why did they have to go and pull a greedy move like that. Plus what this guy said on the 2nd page dosent bode well for the multiplayer part

"Simdragon: I'm going out on a limb here but I am guessing you have not played in the Beta. The planet offer is a joke. There is no city to city interaction. It's single player game with a chat channel and you can trade some resources but in no way do you have to. They have not proven to me why paying for PO is worth even 5 cents. All they did was steal the idea of CJ's and build it into their rehash - stripped down version of City Life. I knew we were in trouble when people were making cities with 15 million people in 5 days without any form of mass transit. This has been the biggest disappointmnet for me since I started gaming over 20 years ago. I would rather play Frogger on my old Atari 2600 over and over again."

Lame. Really lame. Good going monte cristo, make a niche game that isnt casual enough to be a massive seller and then alienate the only fanbase that exists, awesome :frown:

boo  That's really disappointing. So many games I was looking forward to this year turning out badly.. Empire Total War was absurdly buggy, Anno 1404 had the 3 machine activation limit DRM, now this. Crossing my fingers nothing bad happens with Tropico 3 now.

Yeah, I hated the multiple city aspect to SC3k, and there's no way in hell I'd buy this as a multiplayer game, much less pay monthly to do so. So it seems this has gone just a bit further back than the $5 budget bin.

That is the big issue for me, the monthly fee. I might have bought if it was solo play with multi for free, but not going to pay a monthly fee.

Even for $5?

I could never get the beta to work so I don't know if it's worth it, but multiplayer is suppose to be like an MMO experience which if pulled off correctly would be out of this world.

Ditto. I'll probably get this for single player, but the MMO part seemed worthless to me.

bah. i was so jazzed for this game seeing the early screenshots.

/sigh

the technology is here to make the uber simcity game we've been clamoring for, why can't someone do it and do it right?

Sorry when they orginally rolled out the concept it was $5.

shacknews has it listed for $10/month, $7/month if you buy 3 at a time and $6/month if you buy 6 months at a time. So to me if the MMO part of the game is the way it's been made out to be then I'd pay $6. I spend $8 for a tuna sub that I eat in 10 mins 🙂

We have to start our own game company 🙂

It makes you wonder who does the research on these games, look what happened to the very successful SimCity franchise, now it's a pile of rubble.

EA happened to SimCity, that pretty much sums it up.

I was really looking forward to this game (Cities XL), but from the bits and pieces I'm getting off some other forums it's really sounding like this is going to be a fiasco 🙁
