Heh, my ruby teacher is like that too. He's a mac fanboy.

I hate teachers that don't at least try to hide their bias. I had a computer ethics class in college, and the professor was an open advocate of the open source movement. We had to write an ethics paper on the topic of our choice. I wrote about how closed source software can be a good thing - I did not say open source was bad, I discussed the advantages of closed source. It was all well researched, well written, and factual...he gave me a D for no real reason. I used a quote from Richard Stallman - that was in a paper we read for the class - he claimed Stallman didn't say it, even though I cited the paper we had to read!

Oh well, it was a useless class and I don't care about GPA, so I didn't bother fighting with him. I did kinda write the paper to push his buttons because I didn't like him, hahah.

That sounds like the douche I had for a Technical Writing class. Damn hippie grad student gave me a D on my paper on the weapons systems of the F4-E Phantom II because nowhere in the paper did I say anything about them killing people. :disgust:

Oh those people are funny. I worked at Lockheed Martin out of college - we had protesters all the time. My favorite sign said "Hiroshima never again - Stop Lockheed Martin!" Right...because Lockheed had something to do with that? And nevermind the fact that the location they were protesting makes GPS satellites. They must really hate their Garmin!

you should have just fought it out of principle and demand a reasoning... preferably in class so everyone could see his lame excuse.

Remind me of a friend who works for an insurance company. They had a training class where the instructor kept making comments about how everything the insurance companies do really needs to be run by the government.

I took a history class at a community college last summer. One of our assignments was to do a book summary. I got assigned some book about how religion is going to be the cause of the end of the world. So I wrote my summary and the professor gave me a low grade because I didn't criticize it. I didn't support it either, I just gave a summarized version like I was supposed to.

why don't you constantly mock him for the fact that his lord and savior is dying of cancer and tell him to shove his 1-button mouse up his ass?

How do you know his teacher's not *nix snob? Not everybody's an Apple fanboy.

Professors have lots of opinions.. and they get paid to teach.. and they insert their opinions while they teach in an effort to have some kind of significance..

But it only really sticks with the people that respect them.. and the academics..

And their students get out in the business world and realize everything they were told is bullshit.

Pretty much every opinion sounds wonderful when you consider less than half of the big picture..

The best professors would give the students with well-researched but contrarian views better grades for being willing to stick their necks out for what they believe in. Furthermore, teachers should encourage students to challenge the conventional wisdom and even argue in support of highly unpopular viewpoints (regardless of whether they agree with them or not), just because it gives you good practice in arguing your point. If you can make something unpopular sound like a good idea, imagine how well you could argue your point when you're promoting something that people will like?

LOL, is that really the best you can do about someone who dislikes MS?

I highly doubt he's a super-Mac guy anyway; most people who actually know anything about computers are Unix guys, and barely tolerate MS stuff at best. I'd frankly be really wary of a computer teacher who actually likes MS stuff, unless it's an MSCE class or something.

I'm a huge open source advocate. I teach my classes with a linux bias. However I would never fault anyone for using windows or having a difference in opinion. I do however require my students to submit their work in formats that I can read with openoffice.

No... Microsoft does some pretty good stuff.

hahahah, yea, you're right, there is no merit to anything Microsoft has ever done.

well, if you wanna get technical........

Microsoft and PC are it for Desktop work. There's no credible substitute. Mac can be decent if you can find the software to do everything you want to do, and can afford to overpay by a large % for the Apple experience.

For anything serious in the backoffice, *nix is pretty much untouchable, although Microsoft continues to make incremental improvements at every step. Server '08 is very very good, better than '03, which was excellent, which itself was a big leap from '00. So it goes.

But seriously, *nix is still king of the big stuff. The who's who of corps and govs running giant intranets and olympian databases are generally not running stuff from Redmond.

I can relate to the OP's story. My MIS professor is a Microsoft hater who worships open source and unix-based computing...and he's my age. (or older)

He makes his bias against MS VERY well known...yet the entire class is based around MS Office 2007 products.

He says Microsoft is the 1200 lb elephant in the room. Even those who don't like it still have to learn to live with it.

Pardon? MS does some brilliant stuff, and some crap stuff. Just like every other software developer. Certainly the vast majority of the It Dept at work are probably Windows guys and some of them are brilliant.

I took a English 1102 class once and we read The Killer Angels (civil war novel). Afterward we had to write a paper about why the south lost the war. I said it was Robert E Lee's fault. I BARELY passed that class after that lol.
