Rangel, who appeared on Face the Nation this morning, reinforced his idea of a draft. Young people should be forced to give up a couple years of their life to serve the U.S. government. Okay, how many of you guys are fired up and ready to go?

It's called spreading the load.
Now we are using all of our Reservist's up for false War deployment.
At least with a draft we get a pool from all.
I beleieve it would make Republicans think twice before firing up false wars.

The way I understood it it was not a draft proposal. You would have a choice to pick what type of service you wish to perform. I think this is a noble idea to increase civic responsibility. I think that most everyone involved with the military thinks that an outright draft is a very negative thing.

Not grandstanding, more of a keeping his promise. Congressman Rangel has repeatedly tried to create legistlation to bring back the draft and has repeatedly been shut out of the Congress by the Republicans.

Why do the Republicans hate America?
Before anyone says "an all volunteer military is better," this legislation is for national service, i.e. Peace Corp, Teach for America, military, etc. So people people can still volunteer for the military if they don't want to serve in something else.

Has anyone here ever heard of the 13th Amendment?

He should have been removed from office a long time ago. Somehow, his electorate still keeps him in. Really a sad reflection on them.

I wasn't drafted, I joined on my own, but many of my friends did go into the military through the draft.
I think it's good to have a draft because it requires the country's population as a whole to become invested
into the psychological responsibility of service to their country, and taking the assocciated responsibility
of entering into a war and it's ensuing consequences - something that the GOP Leadership never has had to face.
