Rangel, who appeared on Face the Nation this morning, reinforced his idea of a draft. Young people should be forced to give up a couple years of their life to serve the U.S. government. Okay, how many of you guys are fired up and ready to go?

He should have been removed from office a long time ago. Somehow, his electorate still keeps him in. Really a sad reflection on them.

It's called spreading the load.

Now we are using all of our Reservist's up for false War deployment.

At least with a draft we get a pool from all.

I beleieve it would make Republicans think twice before firing up false wars.

I wasn't drafted, I joined on my own, but many of my friends did go into the military through the draft.

I think it's good to have a draft because it requires the country's population as a whole to become invested
into the psychological responsibility of service to their country, and taking the assocciated responsibility
of entering into a war and it's ensuing consequences - something that the GOP Leadership never has had to face.

It is a volunteer force. No one makes you sign up. The idea that it is only the uneducated has been disproven. Are you saying that only democrats serve in the military?

As long as it's you Dems proposing and supporting it, we'll thank you later for your suicide in the next election.

Curiously enough all the Presidents to authorize a draft (after 1863) were Democrats.

This is just more grandstanding from Rangel. Nothing to see here folks.

The way I understood it it was not a draft proposal. You would have a choice to pick what type of service you wish to perform. I think this is a noble idea to increase civic responsibility. I think that most everyone involved with the military thinks that an outright draft is a very negative thing.

Anyone who is not for the draft should be immediately sent to Gitmo as traitors of the United States.

Wouldn't stand a snowball's chance in hell in front of this Supreme Court and rightfully so IMO.

Not grandstanding, more of a keeping his promise. Congressman Rangel has repeatedly tried to create legistlation to bring back the draft and has repeatedly been shut out of the Congress by the Republicans.

Its too bad that it has come to this but someone has to do something. Right now large bonus' are helping with enlistment and re-enlistment, we would have a tough time should we need troops elsewhere.

He knows it won't pass. Both sides of the aisle have shot him down before since they know it is tantamount to political suicide.

I don't think we need a draft. But putting forth a draft bill is a great idea. Let's discuss it.
The current neo-con policy that attempts to make war painless for Americans. Sending in volunteers and borrowing money to pay for it.
If people really looked at the idea of war as something that could get them or thier kids killed or actually felt the money for war coming out of their paychecks than Americans wouldn't be so fast to be tricked into war, like we were in Iraq.

What we need is a draft to create an American Army of Engineering and science where one can pursue a lifelong middle class career in building a better world, where the aim would be to build what supports the common good, but which is built without profit or for profit. Such an Army could attract folk who could dedicate their lives to doing good and retire with enough to enjoy life with a decent enough retirement in the middle class. Such an US Army would create a university system that pays for lifelong learning in any field of interest related to the core tasks.

Why do the Republicans hate America?

Before anyone says "an all volunteer military is better," this legislation is for national service, i.e. Peace Corp, Teach for America, military, etc. So people people can still volunteer for the military if they don't want to serve in something else.

Hey, why not make it like they had in the movie Starship Troopers........you only get to vote if you serve your country (in that case, world government)?? No, I'm not saying you have to be drafted into the military, just be willing to give up 2 years of your life to serve your country. I realize that there's people out there that simply aren't suited to be in the military, and would likely be a greater help to the enemy than to our military. But we could make civic groups, that help to rebuild our national park facilities, pick up trash, deliver meals to the elderly & infirm, etc. Pay them the same basic wage the military gets, house, feed & clothe them in a similar fashion, and give them a couple years to grow up, learn some responsibility, and learn what being out of school really is and can be........THEN they might be responsible enough and smart enough to start being citizens and voters. Keep the military branch seperate from the civic branch (in other words, do NOT expect the civic branch to be a part of the military, or a "ready reserve"), and keep the politics out of it. Those that are willing to give up two years of their lives will be better citizens, imho. :)

Has anyone here ever heard of the 13th Amendment?

The Constitution is just a piece of paper! And we don't live in some Libertarian utopia where you can mooch of the government and never pay the piper.

Applied fairly to the population (no deferments, ala Cheney and Clinton) war would become the REAL last resort.
