Chrysler tech center workers may have lost jobs to H-1B contractors

February 15, 2008 (Computerworld) Karen Trevaski worked at Chrylser LLC's technical center in Auburn Hills, Mich., until she was laid off two weeks ago along with 119 other employees. But Trevaski claims that foreign workers with H-1B visas remain on the job at Chrysler, using software systems similar to the one she used to design automotive parts.

Moreover, Trevaski believes that the H-1B workers were encouraged to learn a new version of Dassault Systèmes SA's Catia software, while she was not. "We had to fight to get V5 training," Trevaski said this week. "And the H-1B workers ? they were just sending them for the training. That's why I'm angry ? it's just totally wrong. It seems as if they just want to get rid of union people."

United Auto Workers Local 412, which represents the laid-off tech workers, is considering whether it should file a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board, according to Walt Atkins, the local's first vice president.

"Why," Atkins asked, "have they got these people over here from another country, taking up American jobs, and [then] laying off American workers?" He said that there may be as many as 150 H-1B visa holders working for contractors in the technical center at Chrysler.

This is exactly what Bushes "guest worker" program would do to millions of Americans.

I would do the same if they weren't importing the replacements.

But, the OP is retarded for trying to make this a Bush issue.

That's right, because you would rather have foreigners on a Visa working and taking a US citizen's job. I hope that there's a day that someone like that takes your job and I'll cheer for them too! I don't care much for unions but to applaud when a US worker loses a job to a foreigner is being a real prick.

Union or not there should be no way a guest worker stays employed while an American capable of the same task gets let go. The Guest Worker is brought in only because there's a shortage of qualified workers, not because they are cheaper. IMO they should be sent packing back to Calcutta or where ever they are from.

Theres a piece you guys are forgetting. If a shop is union, they CANNOT hire non union. Theres probably a loophole for H1B visa holders. From a business perspective it makes sense.

Totally agree. I never knew the day would come when peasants like blackangst would root against his fellow citizens in favor of corporations saving money by importing foreign workers. What a moron.

Fuck the greedy lazy American worker. Let's fire EVERY DAMMED ONE OF THEM and replace them all with illegal immigrants and H1B workers who appreciate their jobs...

<check the batteries in your sarcasm meters boys and girls>

IMO, ANY company that does this kind of shit should be brought up on charges of Un-American Activity...(where's Joseph McCarthy when we NEED him)

The corporation that does this shit should lose their corporate status and any/all taxable deductions for said workers. They should also be responsible for ALL retraining costs and full wages for the displaced workers until they find suitable jobs.
Let's make this kind of activity COST the company more than they could possibly save in such job-cutting.

Wait, you might actually want to seal our border and keep American jobs in American hands?

Red Dawn, you're forgetting the most obvious thing. These are jobs Americans won't do! Isn't that what Bush and liberals keep telling us?

People who believe business is evil for trying to make a profit are idiots. It isn't a corporations job to make work, it's their job to make money.

if bringing in foreign workers is more cost effective than domestic because of the unions its the unions fault not the companys having a healthy US auto industry is more important than the jobs of the greedy union workers.

Tell that to the union shops. It's THEIR decision.

Such a simpleton. Who kows NOTHING about business either.

/sigh

Since when is it a company's responsibility to employ Americans? I always thought a company's job was to make a profit *shrug*

So you think EVERY company on the Dow and NASDAQ with offices outside the USA should close them and only operate inside the US?

99.9999% of white collar automotive jobs aren't in the union.

Really? Then why does the article say "United Auto Workers Local 412, which represents the laid-off tech workers"

Odd.

Yeah, I find that a tad odd too. WTF does a tech worker have to do with the UAW? White collar should not be union - atleast the same as manual labor unions. They can have their own but to group them is stupid.

NOT the same thing...now if the DOW and NASDAQ fired all their American workers and hired H1-B workers to replace them...then sure.

America for Americans. (that is not a rant against legal immigrants, but Americans SHOULD NOT be fired to provide jobs for immigrants.)

I heard a story on NPR I believe, many months ago about the subject of H-1B workers.

Evidently there are lawyers that specialize in helping companies work these laws in their favor. They help companies work within the law, yet virtually guarantee that the company will never have to hire a U.S. citizen.

The story went into some detail on the tactics. Basically, all they have to do is interview U.S. citizens for the job(s), structuring the interview in such a way as to slant the results to leave a trail pointing to results that indicate that the foreign worker is more qualified. Obviously at a much lower pay rate.

I wish I could find the article and all the details. It was rather disturbing to hear. The future looks to be a scary place. Even for those of you who feel very secure in your position.
