Great game from the few hours I have played it. I am enjoying it more than HL2, Battle for Middle earth and NFSU 2 right now. Great looking game and I am really into the plot as well.

i'm there ;)

the game just keeps on getting BETTER.

They didn't reinvent the FPS, however, the way they do things is refreshingly different . . . . crouching brings on a kind of 'stealth mode' where you don't have a "light bar" . . . . rather the entire environment subtly shifts to blue.

it has the same in-your-face "horror" Doom iii has - only it is put in in decent measure so you dont get TIRED of it . . . .

OK, back to the game.

RECOMMENDED.

Aren't finals (finally) over?

All my college age friends seem les stressed now . . . . somehow.

Comeon, Xmas is OVER . . . . make a New Year's Resolution and GET GAMING!

Chron of Riddick is a GREAT place to start.

almost finished now . . . . and NOT disappointed . . . .

Finished!

(late late last night . . . the last "session" was almost 6 hours nonstop - it's that good)

i do have ONE disappointment with this game . . . .

it's only fair to post this . . . .

it's TOO damn SHORT :p

:D

and there is no multiplayer (but i am on dial-up, so 'moot' for me)

(!)

actually, i am looking forward to REplaying it with the Developer's commentary - 'on'. (lots of neat eXtras - much like a DVD movie) . . . .

last thing (i promise - NO more posting about Chron of Rid) . . . . *mini spoiler*

(after Riddick slaughters a couple of heavily armed guards in spectacular fashion, he turns to the Bad Guy and says, "See what you made me do?")

:D

GWAA ive only been playin it for about 3 hours but damn its a sweet game. someone in a post before said about running it in the 2.0 thingy and not the 2.0+++ well it worked for me cus i was getting horrible fps at 1280x1024 and now i went to just regular 2.0 and now its smooth as butta. sweet game cant wait to finish it tomorrow before i go to work. so far well worth the money. graphics are top notch and IMO better than halflife2 which i jizzed all over before this game but this game takes the cake. havent played far cry or doom3 so im not going to comment on them. damn this is a sweet game

Just finished it recently, great game imo. I still wonder why it took so long to finish doom3/hl2 when it only took less then a year to make riddick.

i believe it took longer than a year . . . . it was out first for x-box . . . . however, the PC version is graphically better plus there is an extra level . . . . this is not a "crappy port" . . . . and i believe the Starbreeze engine was already developed (they made an earlier game).

i am "playing" the 'developer's commentary' right now . . . . after you unlock the game you get to hear the guys that created it explan their thinking - the 'whys' and 'hows' of making riddick. Very interesting (except there is TOO MUCH info).

This game killed my 6600GT, nothingl ike getting a newer card and being stumpped already lol. But it works fine using pixil shadders 2.0, but 2.0+.....that is another story, it is playable but not smooth at all. I'd imagine a 6800 could play it.

Wasn't "smooth" on mine either.. i just used 2.0 and it was awesome!

and yes I finished the game too... I had it basically done before Christmas, but haven't had time to completely finish it until now.

I agree with apoppin, it's too short, but amazing game all the way through. GET IT!

Hey, aren't you the guy who started this damned thread and forced me to get this game? ;)

:p

Thanks!

:D

BTW, have you replayed the game with the commentary? It's pretty interersting if TOO long.

ah yes, The Mines . . . . look for some ventillation shafts you might have missed (and there is a very good walkthrough for X-box that covers 90+% of the PC's levels) ;)

No haven't re-played it the second time... although I guess I might, if the commentary is somewhat worth hearing.

I just picked the game today.

This is definately DoomIII engine only with higher quality and crispier textures ....SM2.0++ mode must be really killer for every system out there.

I find it pretty good and addictive. GFX and sound look really nice and gameplay has it's good and bad moments.
It has nice atmosphere (just like DoomIII had, only it's brighter :p)
I don't like the way you use some weapons though. It lacks the class of a great FPS aiming and shooting.
The way you use your hands and shiv though it's really cool... E.g when you break someone's neck from behind.
Interaction is another weak point of the game IMO, but what can you expect when you have played HL2 so recently? :p
Hope to find more interesting points as I move through the game

Anyway as I said game is addictive and it gives the sense of difference.
Definately worth buying IMO and I hope to see more games with this GFX level this year...

Overall (so far) : 8/10

It's NOT the Doom engine - it's Starbreeze.

Interaction . . . what do you expect to interact with in a PRISON environment? Everything is BOLTED down. :p

edit after you finish the game you get a "Commentary" mode unlocked . . . they did NOT want the weapons to be the same as in other FPS - i.e. NO sniper rifle . . . also notice when you crouch and are hidden everything shifts to a subtle blue tinge . . . and you get to get into a mech suit later . . . .

Starlight,Starbright,Starbreeze.. Who cares? It's a complete replica of DIII engine. The exact same amazing lighting/shadow FX and bump mapped characters only with better textures... If this is not DoomIII engine)maybe a special naming agreement with ID) then it's definately a complete replica of it... Look closer unless you're too biased (against DoomIII) to see it... :p

I didn't talk about the weapons variety I said I don't find the aiming/shooting to be so good as in classic FPS. It almost sucks in my book.

And just becuase you're in prison you can't find anything to interact huh? Cmon man... The only thing you can do is flush the toilet and open the doors just like in DoomIII. Another coincidence? (so far, I haven't finished the game) :disgust:

Again I find this game very good but not a classic FPS in my book. 8/10
Compare it with Far Cry and HL2? :disgust:

let me try just once again . . . it is a completely different engine than Doom iii's . . . bias aside, it's fact!:p

It is the Starbreeze engine developed independently and used in an earlier game. . . . Actually, i think Diii has better lighting. ;)

once i got used to the aiming/shooting, i had no problem with it.

Stop with the coincidences with Diii - they are NOT related . . . and the interaction is about what you would expect in a prison . . . . flush the toilet and open permitted doors, talk to guards/prisoners, pick up cigarettes . . . .

You haven't finished it and you are rating it? :p

There is a lot more variety coming . . . . in your face "shock" like Diii and some more environmental interaction (you get to try on a couple of mech suits and run rampant)

AI is much better than Diii's . . . . coincidence? :p

No, it's not a "classic" FPS . . .
. . . it's rather 'different' . . . that's why i finally rated it 9/10 . . . for originality (plus some great corny dialog lines) ;)
(although it does pay homage to the original HL and other classic games - with a 'twist')

. . . and DON'T FORGET the sidequests - the prisoners make some interesting requests that ADD to the plot and immersion . . . . i'd suggest exploring and not rushing to the end . . . . try to find all the packs (the trailers you unlock are worth viewing)

BTW, the commentary is TOO MUCH . . . . if you want to know WHY the developers did the tinniest detail - it is there (fortunately you can skip as much of it as you like)

Ok my problem is not in the nature of the engine... I just find it extremely identical to DIII's one.And I believe that many ppl will see the obvious similarities once they play the game....
Aiming/shooting is not a problem. It just sucks :D
As far as concerns interaction I would expect that you can hit some things, move/grab something useless and play with some things in general. Cmon you played HL2 and even in the most unessecary areas you could do a lot of things... Guess I'm too spoiled after it :p
I do pay attention to what everyone's saying. I hate rushing in a game. I always take my time...
But you're right though in one point. I shouldn't have rated it unless I had finished it.
I hope to amaze me so much in the next level so I can raise my rating.... ;)

Well I found Riddick more entertaining than HL2. There were some parts in HL2 that were just plain dull...the boat level and the citadel come to mind. I was just waiting for those levels to end so I could continue on with the game and see what's next. I never had that feeling with Riddick. With Riddick I felt like I was in a movie. HL2 just felt like a game to me (a really good one though). Riddick was fun all the way through.

It's just your wording that i objected to . . . . i think "extremely identical" needs to be replaced with "similar" since the game engines are not related in in way. similarities yes. ;)

:)

anyway, i think interactivity is just not needed for this particular game . . . . i believe Doom iii's engine and this Starbreeze one have "room" for it . . . HL2's forte is it's interactivity and physics engine . . . . i don't think any game can have it all - yet . . . . you'll get something like Duke Nukem FOREVER. ;)

anyway, i'd like to hear what you think when you are finished (other than 'it's too short') . . . . our opinions are not so far apart about this game . . . . i think i like it a little more then you do. ;)

:D

Is that a DX9 or 8.1 card? If it's not a '9' you'll miss a lot of lighting and some eyecandy . . . . it's probably fast enough if you drop the res a bit.

Chron of Riddick is also on the Xbox and is said to look really nice and be really testing its limits. Might try that . . . . the PC only has one extra level . . . .
