So my buddy at work bought a Gateway DS 400 laptop last Feb. (2003) and everything is hunky dorey until late this summer. For some reason this laptop developed a power problem, it will POST and then immediately shut down. So, being the rich guy he is (green eyed monster of envy speaking here), when he determines that he needs a laptop to help him finish his doctoral program, he decides to buy a top of the line Dell Centrino laptop rather than get his old laptop serviced.

This is where I come in. I am his tech support guy (officially and unofficially) and he gets me to specify and order his laptop for him. My payment: his "dead" old laptop. I get the beast home and check the warranty status online - it's in full warranty until Feb. 2006!!! So, I call him up and tell him what's going on. His response: "yeah, yeah, I just wanted a new laptop. Go for it."

Well, this morning I call Gateway up. For the sum total of $46.20 (shipping/box/materials/labels/insurance) I am sending the "dead" laptop in to be repaired.

Merry Christmas to me! Laptop specs:

P4 2.0GHz 512KB
512MB PC2100
30GB HDD
CD-R/W- DVD combo
15" TFT
32MB ATI Radeon graphics
ESS ES 1988 audio
internal LAN/modem/firewire

Not bad for less than $50, eh?
 
props to you for calling your friend and letting him know instead of scamming a free laptop! win-win for you!!
 
My Nephew went through 4 of those Laptops that had the same problem. Best Buy finally let him replace it with another brand.
 
lol this is rich people's way of dealing with computers (or with any electronic equipment):

my computer/laptop is infested with virus or spyware, I want to buy a new one lol

LoL. 😀 I need the machine more than I need the money man. My laptop will be my stable platform and my desktop is my beater, I'm beta testing XP 64 for M$ right now. My computer is up and down more than a dozen hookers. 😱
