I've read through the Book of Revelation a few times. It's very vague and symbolic. My understanding is that the Rapture is real, but will not occur until after the great tribulation.

Which can only occur after The Great Validation. Which can only occur after The Great Implication. Which can only occur after....

Christianity; completely dependent upon a book written by 1,000 MEN over a 1,000-year period. IOW, complete FICTION.

Please don't bore me w/the trumped-up mathematicaly equations that "prove" the bible is real and Jesus wrote it.

If you try hard enough and give it enough thought, you can mathematically prove that bellybutton lint is the active chemical in a nuclear reaction.
Why did you bother coming into this thread? No one wants to read your bashing, nor your ignorance. If you intend to bash a book, try actually reading it first so you at least know what you are talking about.

FYI, "The Book" was shoved down my throat for 13 years. Old, New and Otherwise Testaments. I used to know it inside and out. I've intentionally forgotten it all, b/c it's all a load of BS. I make my own decisions based on the real world and what works here. NOT what was allegedly written 1,000 years ago to tell me what will work for me in the afterlife. Thanks for making a brilliant suggestion, though.

Obviously you've forgotten it then because you're clearly talking out your ass. Did you think anyone in this thread wanted your opinion? So you dont' like the Bible. So you have a grudge against your creator because mommy and daddy made you go to catholic school where nuns beat you with a ruler. Guess what? NO ONE CARES. This thread was a question directed at Christians (hence the title), not angst-filled atheists.

And last time I checked, anyone was free to post in any thread in these forums. I see a thread that piques my interest, I post in it. If that upsets you, I can call the Whaaaaaambulance for you.

This is true.
St. Paul thought it was coming in his life time.
And the truth, and Church teaching on it, is that we do not know.

You're the whiner that decided to come into this thread, that had NOTHING to do with your beliefs, and spew your hatred to the rest of us. You feel a need to go into threads and attack people and their beliefs?

Nope. I feel the need to go into whatever thread piques my interest. This thread is no different to me than a thread on CPUs or memory or DVD burning software. I see thread, I read thread, I formulate answer/opinion, I post said answer/opinion. I like these forums. Interesting people like you are...well...interesting to work with.

Cram it, churchie. Michael D may be an angry, self-righteous, crotchety blowhard who hates women and children, but.... I kinda forgot where I was going with this.

OK, since I'm so interesting, how about the next time you create a thread on a subject I know very little about (perhaps rebuilding a car engine), I'll come in and spew a bunch of crap that makes no sense and clearly demonstrates my ignorance. Then I'll argue with you when you tell me to stop thread crapping with my ignorance. :)

This is the first time I've ever been called 'churchie'. Never thought that day would come.

It's better than when he used to show his 'shame' to those college girls across the hall from him.

I think most well educated pastors, priests, preachermen, whatever you want to call them, will agree that Revelation is more symbolic than literal. Its an interesting book to be sure, it uses a lot of words to lay out a couple basic principals of the second coming of christ, and that can get pretty confusing, which is why there's no real agreement on how it will all happen. The battle against evil, the 1000 year reign, and the time of the return of Christ (relative to the other events in Revelation) are all strongly disputed.

Considering how little of it I actually understand, Revelation still has lots of cool imagery.

Sadly certain christian sects oversell the rapture. Keep in mind that they have been preaching "the end times" for decades and it hasn't happened yet.

The end times sells books and scares people and yet they are entertained by it all like some disaster movie.

Dispensationalists, the people who are into the very near-future Rapture, believe there's no point to saving the environment when the world's going to end. Many of the same Congressmen who are supported by the religious Right also consistently vote against environmental protections. Reagan's Secretary of the Interior, James Watt, said it rather blalantly:"God gave us these things to use. After the last tree is felled, Christ will come back," Today they're less outspoken, but still consistently vote against environmental issues.

Depends on which sect of Christianity you're talking about. You also left out the third option, that of the Gnostic Christians, which is being saved by knowledge.

So if they are saying it will happen on/around a specific date, it won't.

WHY do we judge a *whole group* just b/c a few of them say or do weird stuff?

No, they're not giving it a specific date but you can track it by the Rapture Index. Google and you'll find a number of sites tracking how nigh the end is today.

Yea they're a little confused...

I have my doubts about rapture and anything that comes from Revelations. There is something about that book of the bible that seems out of place... I think there is also some controversy about it's authenticity?

Christians believe in different versions of it. So, yes, we believe in it, but no, it isn't the same thing for all Christian religeons.

Revelations, a/k/a The Apocalpyse of John, does not claim to be and was not written by John the Apostle, though tradition claims that he wrote it. It's one of a number of Christian apocalypses written between around 100-200AD. You can find all of them that we currently have at http://www.earlychristianwritings.com/
