Funny how people still believe it. Stupid people, I tell you.

On what basis are you making this statement?

On the basis that anyone that buys into the Christian mythos is obviously a retarded moron with less critical thinking skills than the average piece of pocket lint.

Being "spiritual" is bad enough, but believing in JHC is just about as "yeah, I'll take two bridges", as anyone can possibly get.

Let's face it, if nobody's parents indoctrinated their children with the fear of eternal damnation or the promise of eternal bliss (i.e. grew up with the idea of Christ as plausible), nobody would be a Christian. The group that thought their god was an alien and arriving with a passing comet, who all committed suicide, were less gullible. Come on! Drink the Koolaid or believe in the Biblical version of JHC, and I would drink the Koolaid every single time. I guess I am just incapable of turning that large a section of my brain off.

Whatever my opinion maybe on the matter...

You seem to think that the reaction I am looking for is one of "gee I never thought of it that way", when in fact my goal here is simply to make the religious, especially Christians, feel stupid for their beliefs. I am not trying to convince anyone of anything.

My entire life is beset with intolerance, and stupidity because I happen to have been born in a country founded on Puritanism. Even the non-religious in this country base 99% of their morality on the Bible, and I have to pay the price every day, so every chance I get to inform the religious of their infinite stupidity, I RELISH.

You mistake my facepalm. It's simply a reaction to the course this thread is going to take.

I'm not religious in the slightest either, I've just learned that pointing out these things on Anandtech just draws us downwards into an infinite spiral of doom until, fittingly, the god-like moderators appear with their banstick or simply lock the thread.

I'd also disagree that our morality (or any morality) is bible-based.

True that. Our morality is based in the fact that we are herd-animals. Not to mention this country wasn't founded in puritanism - it just happened that many of the early controllers of wealth were puritans. Nowadays those who control the wealth are actually a-religious, as a corporation can't really 'believe' in something, but its politicians can obviously wield religion to divide the citizens.

Ok, morality is now based on the Bible. Let's run with that for now.
And the Bible was written by.....humans, who heard voices in their heads, thousands of years ago.

Yeah, that sounds like a good system.

The problem isn't that our morality is bible-based, it's that our immorality is bible-based. People love obscure nonsensical religious texts because it allows them to pull out random passages to excuse that they're doing. Want to hate gays? Sure, find one single verse. Want to blow up abortion clinics, sure, you can twist something to mean that god wants that. You can pretty much find a couple of archaic words that can mean anything you want so that you're not a sinner or a criminal, you're one of the true believers doing holy work.

Whether or not you set out to do it, posting the same sort of Christian joke pic is a clear troll thread. As it's been done countless times, that pic is certainly not new on here.

yep. troll thread

see, look just above this post. The trolls are out in force.

Why is it that people who are militantly opposed to religion, especially the most clearly insane one ever invented, trolls?

I have had numerous Christians tell me how dumb I am for not buying into their BS. Why should they not... Golden Ru..., Do unto... LAWL!

It's not so much the nature of one's opinion that makes them a troll. It's their choosing to voice it, when they know full-well the reaction it will bring

Point is, I don't disagree with your opinions. But you really should realize that attacking religious belief is utter folly.

Sir, I'm going to need your popcorn, you're disturbing the other posters.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/t.../uk/article4509841.ece

Hearing the dozens of cretins munching their popcorn makes me borderline nauseous every time I go to the theater. If only folks could keep their mastication to themselves...

The day they ban popcorn from theaters in the US is the day I stop going to the movies. I even have a distribution system to make sure the butter flavored topping (TM) gets evenly distributed throughout the bag.

I disagree, sir.

The term trolling is related to fishing, not little green monsters that live under bridges. When you hear the word troll, think bait.

Baiting I am not doing here.

Trolling involves putting something out with the hope that someone is either going to agree or disagree with the idea in such a way as to entrap themselves, which is when the trollor (not troll), then jumps in and takes advantage of this fact in a clever effort to make the FISH appear stupid.

I have no such need. Christians are already fish and appear stupid on their face. I merely like to point it out.

(perhaps in a very mean way, I am helping some young Christian, who will someday think back on the logics and artfulness of my witticisms, and become a nice little atheist, and it will be in some small way, my fault)

And if you don't like it, just start your own religion, or find a "different translation" of the same text. There are lots of options to choose from.

It's funny how they're all the "one true religion." Maybe the one true religion died out eons ago. Or maybe it won't be created for another 500,000 years.

trolling has many definitions. see up there? I posted them for you to see. Yes, a troll is a little green person. Yes, trolling is a verb that describes a method of fishing whereby you drag a line behind a moving boat. Yes, trolling is also another verb that describes gay men cruising night clubs to pick up underage boys. A troll is also another noun that describes a certain type of internet news forum member.

Here you are exhibiting at least 2/4 of those widely accepted definitions for the term.

You don't have to agree with that, but that also doesn't make you right about how others perceive your comments.

yep. definition of troll. you already said you hope to gain nothing by it. 99% of people classify this as trollish. How does your subjective rejection of this classification make you correct?

How is what you are doing not baiting? You make a bold inflammatory proclamation ("anyone that buys into the Christian mythos is obviously a retarded moron with less critical thinking skills than the average piece of pocket lint"), sit back, and wait for someone to take issue with what you've said. That's the definition of baiting. What, do you expect a Christian to see that statement and just say, "Hmmm, maybe he has a point," and move on? You are trying to get someone to yell at you, pure and simple, baiting them into a fight, at which point you can sit back and laugh at the people you've pissed off. That's trolling.

Bible quotes in 3...2...1...

"The Case for Christ" by Lee Strobel

"The Case for Christ" is Lee Strobel's personal account of the critical examination of Christianity and the Biblical scriptures. Strobel, a journalist and legal editor for the Chicago Tribune, and an atheist, began his research of Jesus Christ after seeing the dramatic changes in his wife's life, attitude, and behavior after she became a Christian.

Strobel leaves no stone unturned, analyzing historical, archeological, scientific, literary, and psychological evidence for the accuracy of the Biblical scriptures and the story of Jesus Christ. After traveling the world, pouring through translations and extra-Biblical sources, interviewing countless highly-credentialed scholars, and reading the Biblical scriptures with a discerning critical eye, Strobel was left with overwhelming evidence for and no credible evidence against both the reliability of the Bible and the truth of the story of Jesus. Strobel then became a Christian, and now uses his analytical/journalistic training to present his story of converting from atheism, making the case for Christ.

If anyone would like a copy of this book but doesn't have the means to purchase it, I would be glad to purchase a copy for you and send it to you. PM me for details.

I'm all for ridiculing religious absurdities but this thread, like most on ATOT concerning religion, has turned into nothing more than a Boy-atheist ego circle jerk
