A California Highway Patrol officer was shot and killed early this morning during a traffic stop on Highway 99 near Hammett Road, authorities said.

The officer had the stopped car's registration in his hand when someone in its passenger seat shot him at least once, hitting him in the face. As he was dying, the officer called in a description of the car.

That car is described as a dark green 1990 Nissan Maxima with California license plate 5KWA335.

According to the state Department of Motor Vehicles, the car is registered to Bertera Allen of Stockton. The registration expires Feb. 26, a spokeswoman for the state department said. Phone calls to her home went unanswered.

Electronic road signs in the area, usually used to alert motorists to traffic conditions or Amber alerts, were flashing the car description and license plate this morning.

The CHP already has received some tips as to the suspect's whereabouts, according to Sgt. Wayne Ziese.

The incident happened on northbound Highway 99 about 4:40 a.m. near Ripon, north of Modesto. The road is flanked by single family homes on one side and a railroad track and blooming almond orchards on the other.

Northbound 99 remained closed this morning.

CHP has not released the identity of the officer, but a spokesman did say the officer previously had worked at the Oakland CHP office.

He is the fifth CHP officer to be killed in the line of duty since September.

Very sad. Cop killers are the lowest of low and should be hunted down.

I disagree; I think people who kill women and children are lower.

Still sad though. And those people will be hunted down. Today is a good day to commit some crimes in that area because I guarantee you 90% of that presinct is going after those guys.

Did he meet his quota?

I do not know, but I have not met mine, today, and you just landed on my list of top candidates. :|

I agree with the sentiment but it just came out bad that way. Next time say, maybe if cops were asked to do more meaningful work instead of HP to catch speeders or expired registrations, it may not have happened.

Why don't you go street race some more, speed racer.

Maybe CHP wouldn't have to catch speeders if people stopped breaking the fvcking law.

Yes because making the roads safer for others isn't imporant. :disgust:

Doubt that, but they will find him.

That's what I mean. The fact that cops are being put in danger for revenues is ridiculous. We don't know what the stop was for, but it could have easily been for driving with a cell phone or going 10 over the limit. How about focusing on fighting crime, instead of dedicated traffic duty??

As for making the roads safer, how does hiding in the bushes with lights off accomplish that? What about car chases?

Here's a thought- Instruct police officers to use common sense instead of imposing quotas on them.

See I don't get why people say that. I think a killer's a killer. Are you saying that a person who kills a convenience store owner is better than a cop killer? What about somebody that kills a small child? I know it's just a figure of speech, but I just hear it so much. A cold-blooded killer is a cold-blooded killer and they should all burn in hell.

Half the people on this board will disagree and hate us for thinking this but I don't give 2 sh1ts about them. I agree with you.

Here's a thought-- get your head out of your @ss and realize that the cop was probably not shot for the traffic stop alone. You don't kill a cop to avoid a traffic ticket.

I'm guessing the @sshat that did this had a warrant out for something much, much more serious. And had he have not shot the cop, he would've been caught.

Traffic stops get more than just traffic offenders off of the street...

It could have been better said if you said it without calling him an @ss. Fact is, we don't know what happened yet so don't jump the gun.

No no no. We'd much rather have those people on the street, as long as Cops don't have to perform traffic stops.
