Brown, NT dominates the IT industry. It does not dominate web servers, but it does dominate the IT industry as a whole, that is why I thought that this beginner in question (not an experienced server administrator) would do better to learn some skills working with and around NT instead of Unix, because his experience is more easily applicable to IT as a whole, not just server-related work - if he/she should want to work in IT.

Skoorb: Funny. I have been working in the industry for almost 10 years and NT is the laughing stock of the server field. Sure, it has the workstation market locked down but it does not dominate anything else.

The only reason that NT has any presence in the server market is that the field is saturated with MCSEs and they need to put them all to work on something.

I'll take one Unix server and one admin over a cluster of 20 NT servers and five MCSEs to do the same job any day.

Obviously many people here are emotionally attached to an OS. For a beginner its simple, go with NT.

Let's stop these broad "X dominates the IT/field/industry/whatever" arguments, because they're always innacurate. What exactly does "dominates the IT industry" even mean?

Let's be real here, UNIX obviously is used for the majority of the web/DNS/ftp/routing services on the internet. NT is very common in small offices and is used for many things other than just Internet services. The only thing where NT really dominates is in the number of people who know/use it (or at least people that claim to).

To answer the question at hand; if you're new to this, why are you starting a web hosting service? If you ask me, I would only want an experienced sys admin who's familiar with UNIX to be hosting my web site.

Just my 2 cents.

Oh my god, its like we're all talking to frigging walls. I have admitted on several ocassions in this thread that Unix is probabaly a superior server architecture to NT from a technical and performance standpoint.

The reason I recommend NT to a BEGINNER is because Unix is much harder to use for one thing, but on top of that he/she may gain experience in working with and around NT, which overall - unless he/she wants to be a server admin - will benefit them more in the long-run if they want to get work in the IT field BECAUSE more computers in the IT field are running NT than Unix. That is my one and only point.

Its like this: Would you recommend the average joe to learn a cab or drive an F1 car? F1 cars may be faster and more fun but if you want this joe to get a job you'd recommend learning to drive a cab...and overall those driving cabs have a higher combined income than those driving F1 cars...umm, anyway thats my analogy hehe

I think maybe the two guys between me and Dwell got at what I'm trying to say easier than me...ND he isn't starting to run a web hosting service merely trying to find one to use and wondered what sort of service to go with.

That's the problem with NT. "So simple, an idiot can use it." I guess it doesn't matter, it's not my operation.
