I made a similar decision 7 yrs ago. Packed up and moved to Dallas due to no income tax, low cost of living, and surprise to find that I actually got a small bump in salary then doing similar IT work. My dollar goes much further and Dallas and come on, there's like 4 Fry's here within driving distance!!!
Lived in San Diego, CA and that was just way too expensive although it was so very nice - just couldn't afford it.
Lived in the Wash DC area and got priced out too - it got too expensive.
Didn't want to live in a landlocked state since I like to be able to drive to the beach.

Dave

Why you say that?

It's the motto of a famous BBQ place in Fort Worth... the Railhead. Goes back to a long rivalry between Dallas and Fort Worth. What most people fail to realize is that Dallas, Fort Worth, and Denton have grown into one large metroplex of 5 million+ people...

Yep... I know the Railhead well. Excellent BBQ. Cousin's is still the best though. I  Cousin's BBQ! DFW may be one huge city but there are distinct differences between Fort Worth, Arlington, and Dallas. Namely, Fort Worth rocks compared to the rest. :D

They all suck. But Dallas and LB would suck the most. In land, east bay would suck too. Does that mean im voting for TN?! WTF?!

well, i lived in LA for 20 years and SF the last 12 months or so. LA wins hands down: better weather, lower cost of living, you can actually have a car, etc...

there are a million other reasons. SF is a cool vacation spot but not somewhere you want to live.

Pleasanton, CA (currently training here for a week)
Long Beach, CA

Unless you're pulling in a good six figures, you will be poor here. A moderate house in Pleasanton is a good million. They are cheaper in some of the surrounding cities (Sunnyvale, Mountain View), but cost of living here is insane.

Having lived in TN most of my life, it's a great state to live in and Nashville is really becoming a great city. Lived in AZ for the last 7 years and always missed TN.

I would agree. It has been insane for the last 5 years.

You can get a 1-2BR condo one city over for about $380-$450.

I love the Bay Area. Much better than LA fo' sho'.

not too hot, not too cold, not too humid, lots to do in the area. People aren't complete a-holes. California rocks! I miss it :(

DFW FTW!

You have a little bit of everything here! :)

...as long as you love blue skies, don't mind heat, hate rain, and despise snow.

No, really, it is a great place!

Ok, not pure, it's like 80% white. I'm not positive how segregated it is, but it is the Bible Belt. I was just implying that it may not be as diverse as the Bay Area (but Pleasanton is mostly white too). It was not a knock against it, it would be my second choice of the cities listed.

Pleasanton is by far the best city out of those listed. It's pretty damn expensive though, if you wait a couple years it should get much cheapre though.

Out of those, Id rather work in Long Beach, then I would get a place in Huntington Beach or Newport Beach which are both much nicer than Long Beach.

Then you can surf on the beach 365 days a year

LA is a pit, but of course so is Dallas. Never been to Nashville, might be nice if you can stand a pure white segregated city.

Nashville is 64% white

Really depends on what you are looking for. When I hired into my current job, I had the option of SoCal or the midwest.

While my salary offer was quite generous for SoCal, it is still not enough to purchase a house here. I would love to own even a townhome in Huntington Beach, or the surrounding area, but the bubble peaked the summer after I moved here...and even apartment rent is insane...but I prefer living in an urban areas, and with that comes certain sacrifices.

Need to determine what you value in terms of work life balance...then match the location to those criteria.

LOL. It's pretty obvious you haven't been far beyond the borders of your city (or hell, block).

High Wage + low cost of living + low taxes + low crime rate = win

For which city, numbnuts?

i would say with 2 CA cities and 2 midwest cities (of which both states don't have state income tax) the answer is quite obvious.
