I don't venture in here much, but I have the opportunity to see him speak. I have given it thought and would like to hear some of your commentary on his work.

He is great social critic of his time. Bashes both side of the isle. Righties hate him for the truth he speaks. The libs have a love/hate relationship with his writings. His words ring true.

I have read the following by him:

Case Studies in Hypocrisy, U.S. Human Rights Policy
Free Market Fantasies
Propaganda And Control Of The Public Mind
The New War on Terrorism
An American Addiction

Propaganda is to a democracy what the bludgeon is to a totalitarian state.

Personally, I'm in favor of democracy, which means that the central institutions of society have to be under popular control. Now, under capitalism, we can't have democracy by definition. Capitalism is a system in which the central institutions of society are in principle under autocratic control.

Either you repeat the same conventional doctrines everybody is saying, or else you say something true, and it will sound like it's from Neptune.

You never need an argument against the use of violence, you need an argument for it.

Those are some of my fav quotes from him

Chomsky is awesome and 'maybe the most important intellectual alive today.'

If you are really interested in Chomsky, I would recommend reading Manufacturing Consent. This is his masterpiece.

Chomsky is really good at researching factual information in order to point out the hypocrisy in the arguments of many of him adversaries. The great part about how he writes is that every argument he uses is referenced and documented, usually at the back of the book.

I recommend you read this guy's stuff. Just be aware, when you talk about this guy in public, people are going to call you un-American and the like. GL

Thanks MAW1082 and GOPhatesUSA. I've actually watched a few hours of footage on him (around 5 or 6 hrs worth) and he is very well-spoken and makes a well-supported point about whatever topic he is discussing.

Having on several occasions heard him speak, he's obviously a bright guy. But it did seem to me that he had a habit for making sweeping statements without providing specific supporting data.

If you are a critical listener, you will learn some things, but you will also be dissatisfied.

While your at the library, I suggest you look into Chomsky's repeating of communist propaganda during the 1970's that the genocide in Cambodia was not happening.

He may have said the same thing, I dunno, but your implication is misplaced.

Yea, i hate him. When i was in grad school at berkeley he came to talk. This was right around the time the president sh!t for brains was pounding the war drum. He was there for two talks, both sold out (although tickets were free) very quick. Everyone was anticipating a great social commentary on the recent rhetoric being spewed by the admin. He gave two HORRIBLY boring linguistics talks. I went the second night because there were tickets available after his linguistics talk the night before. I hoped he would actually talk about the social situation at the time since he wasted his first night on linguistics, but he didnt. I hate him for that...

isn't linguistics chomsky's area of expertise? I thought that was what made him famous, and his actually scientific credentials.

Yes, he is a linguist, but it was a campus wide event--albeit, sponsored by the linguistics department. Nonetheless, absolutely everyone was expecting him to talk about the current social environment. I was being a bit facetious with my post. ;)

Damn. I did more research on him and his political views. Libertarian socialism is something I cannot endorse at any level  No private property? Yikes!

(Though it isn't a talk about his political convictions. I may very well still go/this will not dissuade me.)

My advise is to go. Even if you walk away totally disagreeing with him at least you'll know it is him you disagree with and not someone else's strawman.

Yeah, right now it is more of a time and financial decision that is to be made. I'm open to hear it.
