Choke my chicken or no?

My wife and I have a buff orpington rooster who had something like a stroke. He was paralyzed on one side for close to a month. Over the past few weeks he has gotten better.

He is living in our dining room. Sometimes he makes his way over to the patio doors so he can look outside and see the hens. My wife keeps some towels down to keep the poop off the floor.

6 weeks later he is getting a little better. His balance is still out of whack. He can walk as long as his breast is against the floor.

Should I choke my chicken and put him out of his misery? Or give him more time to recover?

You want to know if you should choke your chicken when it has already had a stroke. To stop halfway would just be rude, imo.

You know in your heart what is right here but sometimes we need a friend to validate our decisions. It's not unheard of to get a vet to look at it, even if only to make sure the whole flock isn't at risk.

IMO its more humane to pop the neck than to choke it. If you're feeling squeamish you might consider using a shotgun to remove the head.

What else are we supposed to do? He has trouble eating and drinking. If he was out in this summer heat he would not last a day.

No other chickens have presented with these same symptoms.

My wife wants to take him to a local vet, I told her to go ahead and go.

Rooster chicks are cheap. There are places on the internet where you can buy rooster chicks for less than $1.50 each. My stepson bought 100 roosters to butcher for something like 75 cents each. It is the emotional attachment and responsible ownership that is keeping him alive.

We have 3 young roosters in the flock, then my wife and I have an 8 month old Rhode Island Red rooster on loan to my cousin.

The humane thing to do is take care of him and keep him comfortable. Which is being taken care of.
 
Personally, I have a soft spot for almost all animals. As long as he could be helped and fixed (especially after a vet visit) I would try to keep him alive, unless he was suffering terribly. Only when there's no more options would I put him down.

I'd also never be able to chop off his head after caring for him like my own child for 6 weeks. I'm guessing they don't euthanize chickens, but I'd make the vet kill him.

Are roosters good eating? Serious question. I don't think I've ever eaten one, unless I didn't know it. I assumed all the chicken in stores was the females.

He does not seem to be in any pain. He scoots around the dining room floor, has a certain spot under a stool he likes to sleep at, makes his way to the patio doors and looks outside.

He just can not stand up and walk.

Butcher them before the hormones kick in.

You have eaten rooster before, you just did not know it. Where do you think the chickens at the grocery store come from?

This is news to me. I thought all the male chicks were immediately ground up into cat food. I would think an adult rooster would make an okay stew.

I assumed they were females. I used to catch chickens in a chicken house for spare cash when I was a teen, and I think those were all females.
 
Choke him? No
Break his neck - better
Take an axe to his head like my dad showed me how when I was little - the best solution - quick and easy - ready to be plucked and boiled.

and some people don't know what respect for life entails. That rooster has a better life than any chicken you eat from a package at the grocery store - and it will have a nicer death this way. We weren't meant to be vegetarians - nor was the tiger or wolf - but you don't see people going around telling them they have no respect for life - they would have eaten this rooster first.

I'm looking at it... and I see... a chicken nugget. 🙂 j/k - a joke really... but a rooster isn't a chick. It's a full grown male. The picture could be whoever knows how old - at least a few months from the OP post since "He was paralyzed on one side for close to a month. Over the past few weeks he has gotten better." - and that was a picture of when they first got him.
