This is news to me. I thought all the male chicks were immediately ground up into cat food. I would think an adult rooster would make an okay stew.

I assumed they were females. I used to catch chickens in a chicken house for spare cash when I was a teen, and I think those were all females.

The chicken meat you buy at the grocery store is from a cross breed that is very fast growing. The chickens have to be butchered before they are 3 or 4 months old or they will die from a heart attack, become lame, or heat stroke.

Their bodies grow so fast the legs can not keep up with their weight.

The males and females are butchered before they start to sexually mature.

The rooster my wife and I have is a buff orpington. Is is a classic slow growing heritage breed.

TH- he seems okay then. See what the vet says as far as his condition.

I know it's a poor example, but we don't put our family members down if they became maimed or something, do we?

i swear some people have no respect for life, doesnt surprise me at all OP is from texas

This is such an irrational post. Get over yourself.

We raised a pig for 6 months. Cutest thing ever. It's now sitting in my neighbors freezer in several different packages of chops, bacon and other assorted parts. Guess what. We're about to do it all over again with a new pig.

Interesting!

Thank you.

The egg layers are a different breed of chicken than meat chickens. Same species, just different a breed.

Egg layers grow slower than meat chickens, lay good for around 2 years, then are shipped off for dog and cat food. These are called battery chickens because they are kept in a battery cage their whole life.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battery_cage

Their only glimpse of fresh air and sunlight is when the are shipped via 18 wheeler truck from the laying warehouse to the meat processing warehouse.

It is a very sad life.

related youtube video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKU8j-XUfUQ

Sometimes companies will sell their retired layers. Farmers will buy the chickens to save them from being turned into animal food.

Yeah you don't have to tell me. Spend eight or ten hours stooped over running around in ammonia-reeking muck and darkness grabbing them by the legs and it becomes very clear that it's better to be higher on the food chain.

Here's how it went: we started at 6 AM. You went into the chicken house, grabbed them by the legs, three in one hand and four in the other. I don't know why those numbers but that's what the farmers said to do. You brought your haul out and handed them up one bunch at a time to a guy standing on a trailer bed. He stuffed them into a crate and stacked it with others on the bed. That went on for up to ten hours, and you got $15 at the end.

Threads like these are not cool.

If you want to kill the animal do it without getting an audience.

I'd have left it with the main chickens if I wasn't going to make it a pet.

Whatever you do it will be a stupid decision. I'm just basing this off the rest of your posts.

I want you to talk me out of putting the bird down.

My wife is stressed, and I want to give it every chance to get better.

If it's suffering or it's unable to perform its roosterly duties, kill it. Doesn't seem like a particularly complicated question.

Reality is harsh sometimes I guess.

That is one I had never done, but have done a few in the past close to it I guess.

Once again your probably posting where you shouldn't be.

If you don't like it don't say anything at all and leave instead of boosting your post count it appears, as you're not saying anything other than being an asshole again and accusing him of looking for an audience.

Like I've said many time, you never say anything unless there is something negative in there to slam someone.

That is a lie and you are not a moderator so sit the fuck down and zip it.

Go crazy like BikeJunkie and get yourself kicked.

Posts joking about killing an animal are not cool.

Vegetables are also living things. I guess we have to eat dirt.

One has to realize when one is being obtuse or ignorant.

The not killing thing is mostly about humans in the bible.

However; we have put a special level on animals because they feel and can experience fear and other emotion.

That would be you're call dude.

1. Go get a dictionary
2. Find the words "your" and "you're"
3. ??????
4. Don't post anything on the internet until you know what they mean.
5. Profit?
