How much is $.63 worth to a person in rural China?

I'm sure it's a lot more than you realize.

No, actually, it does not. Mad Cow is very hard to track and is spread through feed and its byproducts. Rabies is NOT spread that way nor spread like the Flu.

Well you forgot to take into account the difference between disposable income of US and Chinese govt. What may be cakewalk for US (cost of shots either paid by the govt. or the owner) might be an impossibility for the Chinese...

From the article for those with short attention span.

about 3 percent of Chinese dogs are vaccinated against rabies, according to the center. Access to appropriate treatment is highly limited, especially in the countryside.

1 human life is obviously more important than 50,000 dogs, but the resources and effort they could have used instead of flat killing 50k dogs would have been much better - economic utility-wise.

Out of 50K dogs, how many actually had rabies?

When other countries kill 2 or 3 million cows because one or two may have Mad Cow disease, nobody complains because this is the only way they can cope with the problem.

Rural Chinese live in extreme poverty and can barely feed themselves. Spending money on dogs is out of the question. They cope with the problem the only way they can.

I would have been hiding my dogs and dressing up my cats as dogs.

Sad as it is, I tend to agree. :(

I have to agree too. People are jsut overreacting to this because of the false notion Red Chinese=Evil no matter what they do. China could take out North Korea tommorow and some of these dimwits would complain about some bs like the Human Rights violations or diplomatic violations the "evi" red chinese did.

Some people just practice selective ignorance, espically with racisim against the chinese. espically since they grow up in a speicifc culture of "right" and "wrong" that breeds a sense of cultural superoity and intolerance/stupidity of other cultures and peoples.

And then consider how the media blows everything out of porportion just liek the Isreal/Hezbollah situation and how Isreal is always labeled the evil nation while the suicide bombing, civilian mortoring, child "martyring' palestineans and Hezbollah brainwashed lebonese are inherently angelic. Same situation here.

Rural chines dont have a cush $400 RMB ($50 USD) to spend on some vaccine for a dog when $400 will feed a familt formonths. Killing the dogs was psossibly the only option to prevent an epidemic. Learn the facts and stop assuming that since you can blow 1 year worth of a chinese farmers salary on a ipod, all the other 6 billion people in the world can blow $300 on whatever the hell they want.

it's more wrong that lebanese just sit there and do nothing while hezbollah wreaks havoc. either means 1) lebanon support them or 2) they're incapable of stopping them. either way israel has moral superiority when fighting this war.

The Chinese Government has plenty of money. You, apparently, are an apologist for this type of behavior. China just chooses to spend their money elsewhere. Period. You should look at their revenues and economic strength. Their government has plenty of money to spend on defense and prosecuting the Falun Gong, but fvck no should they spend a dime on easily available and cheap rabies vaccinations. They are too busy imprisoning the owner of Apex or coddling Kim Jong-Il.

Hmm.. my post disappeared or something. Anyways, who cares.. its just dogs. Sure it would suck for the owners, but the Chinese get treated like crap regardless.

If I had to venture a guess, I'd bet that way less then 100% of China knows that this even happened, and they'd probably be beaten to death for talking about it.

Of course they can barely feed thesmelves when the Government is taking farm land away, so more factories/companies can build on it.

Um, no it wasn't necessary.

In the not so distance past they had to slaughter chickens and pigs to contain various flu epidemics so how is this different.

But those are large populations of domesticated animals that were meant to be slaughtered at some point, for human consumption.

Apparently they took perfectly healthy dogs away from their owners and killed them? Not the same thing at all.

Westerners place a very high value on pets, whereas other cultures do not. When stuff like this happens, the chinese shrug and say "no big deal" and everyone else in the world says "HOW THE HELL DO YOU THINK LIKE THAT?"

um westerners still euthanize millions of dogs a year.

Big difference between that and having my healthy dog beaten to death with a pipe in front of me as I take him for a walk. I'm guessing.....just guessing, that the euthanizing process is typically a bit cleaner and less painful for the animal.

The only thing that sucks is that the owners lost property. The actual value of a doggy life is nil.

How in the FVCK can you explain rabies turning into an epidemic? This isn't the goddamn flu. This wasn't just the killing of strays, or even animals in the wild that carry and transmit rabies...but the killing of healthy pets taken from their owners.

Thats the whole point. They took the dog away from the owner, without good reason, and killed it.

Sadly, this is probably low on the list of horrible things that the chinese government does, no doubt.

I won't debate with you about the value of a dogs life, because you would never understand. Sure, human life is worth more, but there are plenty of people I would rather see dead than 50,000 (or whatever number) healthy pets.

Do you wanna volunteer to check all 50K dogs for rabies? Are you donating money for such a task? Yeah, I don't think so. In the end Human Life > Dog Life. Oh BTW, for all you people hating on the Chinese government for killing 50K dogs, your US government's not doing so "bad" on killing dogs too, just more incognito. While down from previous years, US animal shelters kill more than 4.2 million dogs a year.

What the hell is wrong with people. This makes me sick. :disgust:

Shut your fvcking trap, you fvcking racist.

It has nothing to do with race, it has to do with what country it happened in.
People who live in China are Chinese.... correct?

You draw large conclusions off such little notions. Turn your brain on.. maybe tap on that sarcasm meter as well.. I think it's broken.

China has seen a major rise in the number of rabies cases in recent years, with 2,651 reported deaths from the disease in 2004,

50 people die from sars in US/Cananda and it'san epidemic. 10 people die from avian influenza which has to this day shown to be hard to transmit from person to person, much less nimal to person prompts $8 billion in spending and stockpiling a vaccine that has a "possibility" to be effective against the bird flu.

2650 and climbing yearly.

Experts have tied the rise in part to an increase in dog ownership, particularly in rural areas where about 70 percent of households keep dogs. Only about 3 percent of Chinese dogs are vaccinated against rabies, according to the center. Access to appropriate treatment is highly limited, especially in the countryside.

High numbers of dogs that are not cared for against rabies and in concentrated areas with a lto of humans.

Hmm..

High concentration and number of potential hosts

Animals already infected

Humans infected

Ability of rabies to craze an animal to be aggressive and bite, which is the way rabies is transmitted

A monetary inability to prevent or limit the spread of an epidemic once ti starts

And up to 50,000 die each of from rabies in the World...for China (having such a large population) 2,651 doesn't seem so huge.

Hell, India alone reports ~30,000 deaths a year caused by rabies. The problem is just as much about poor human healthcare, as it is lack of vaccinations for the dogs.

Face it, there is no justification in taking ones property (dog) and killing it for no reason.

Unless if there is no way for the government to slow down the rise of rabies besides the killing of dogs in areas with infection.
