i am sorry, but i would like to add this about china and the olympics.

it seems these days nobody is going to be pleased about where the olympics are held. The sad fact about society is you can't please everbody. No matter what country they are held in, there are human rights abuses. I think only one country has the right to say there are no abuses but i don't think we'd like the olympics to be held there. I think giving the olympics to china is giving china a chance to be better, and we need to support and stand for that. We spend too much ime allowing the media to paint a poor picture, and we endorse the media for it. It's too bad that we have become a media driven society that needs instant news. instant news tends to sensationalize because it has to get the ratings. Stories become bigger then they are because nobody cares if they are not front page.

Well, we could censure all the media, internet and outside news like certain countries do, so that our people are blind and stupid as to what lies outside of our borders. We could create a kind of blind nationalism of people that don't know any better since they have only been spoonfed what our government wanted them to hear/believe. We could lock up dissenters and anyone that chose to be critical of our government. We could flood our countrysides water supply and land with toxins and chemicals from state run plants so that entire villages our filled with carcinogens...

Yeah, they have definitely come a long way...

I don't think anyone complained much when they had the World Cup in Seoul, and it was right next door to China.

Their a kinder, gentler totalitarian state.

So, are you claiming that China hasn't improved in the last 30 years?

Number of executions falling sharply in China

Incidentally, China has about 118 prisoners per 100,000 while the US has about 738 prisoners per 100,000.

As for polluting the environment with toxins, haven't we done this in the past too? I guess we never had any controversies in those areas huh? I guess we've never had people complain about chemicals or heavy metals being dumped in rivers and lakes.

My point is that China isn't perfect. It's far from perfect. I consider myself lucky that I was born in the US. But I think it is undeniable that China has made major improvements in human rights and freedoms. It's very different now. I remember when everybody over there wore those grey Mao suits. There's a lot more individual freedoms over there now.

I think it's counter-productive to constantly bash China on the things they still need to improve on while ignoring the progress they have made. It's like a parent who constantly criticizes a child who made 2 B's, 2 C's and 2 F's while ignoring the fact that he previously got 6 F's the last semester.

2/3 of our inmates are serving sentences for non-violent crimes and our prison system is so cushy why not? Our nanny state views drug possession as a worse offense than manslaughter. Inmates get 3 square meals a day, free cable, free legal representation, free room and board, free conjugal visits(usually from large men, but ohh well) and they get to read, play basketball, lift weights all day without a worry in the world...Until the prison system stops becoming a joke, they will stay full. If we killed as many people in US prisons, people might actually think before committing crimes.

China is building a new coal burning energy plant every week(each plant can pollute the environment from 40-80 years) and were excluded in the Kyoto Accord. Their CO2 emissions are increasing 11% per year with no end in site.

"I don't think the ancient Greeks envisioned the Olympics to include politics, activism, etc, just pure athletics."

what stupid reasoning. The Greeks believed and envisioned alot of things, but that doesn't mean we have to follow them.

hey, yeah. lets have them someplace here, like how about atlanta. where it's not overcrowded, polluted, trashy, and wait.. we did that and the only thing atlanta had on china was we had some dude who attacks abortion clinics blow up a trash can.
it's only controversy because the media has nothing else to harp on, bush is dead duck, oil prices dropping, etc etc.. the media needs something to focus on that they can sensationalize...

Was the US revoking VISA's of people that disagreed with their policies?

or did they have an air pollution index twice of what was considered high?

Atlanta, overcrowded? Compared to Beijing? Hell no.

Atlanta, polluted? Compared to Beijing? At least an order of magnitude less.

Atlanta, trashy? Compared to Beijing? Nope.

Random idiots in the US blowing up things still doesn't compare to state-sanctioned murder. Remember Tienanmen Square!

Again, congratulations, you're trying to improve. Has it reached an acceptable level? No. Try again when you've actually made enough improvements to be considered something other than a totalitarian state.

If the US is a nanny state, then China is a "24 hour catholic school with angry rabid zombie nuns who hit your fingers with rulers then eat them" state.
